Cummins into 1993 W350 Gasser

Postby WillRRoberts » Thu Jul 18, 2013 10:43 pm

I've been looking for a clean regular cab 1st Gen for a while now and I finally found a great one, but as luck would have it, it's a gasser(360 V8). At first I tossed it aside, but on second thought, the truck is a one-owner, with 58,000 miles, ZERO rust(from Arizona), and I may be able to pick it up pretty cheap. So, I am now tossing around the idea of doing a 12v conversion. This would also give me some incentive to do a motor and trans build before installing the pair.

Basically, before I go ahead and dive into this I am reaching out to see if anyone has any info on a conversion like this:
Has anyone seen this done before?
I've done some searching and found a lot of people talking about doing it, but nothing that was completed, nor even started.

Thanks, any help is much appreciated,
Will

Do it if you have a first gen it's as simpile as swapping parts
92 Cummins: DD, basic mods, topper, 9'2" bossV
92 Cummins: 10' tall, Rockwells and r1's "Dirty Addiction",
83 RC/SB Cummins: engine set back 18", block 89w/h20 after cooler, fire ringed and worked head, studs, billet 64/68/14w/race cover, custom header, bigger sticks, 47rh, dana 60, four wheel disk, and big Mickey Thompsons w/ Weld drag lites. "The Mustard Bucket"

You're going to need a donor truck, it's the easiest way. You need to swap the engine, trans, underhood and cab harnesses, PCM, and a bunch of small parts that I will think of later. Maybe the front springs to hold the Cummins, exhaust. If you want AC, you need all that stuff from under the hood of the Cummins truck.

I see the NY plates, where are you at?

The truck is in Rochester, NY. I was on my way from Philadelphia to Niagara Falls last weekend and saw it as went through Rochester. Originally, I am from Louisiana, but went to college in the North-East so I have some friends up there.

I'll actually be out of the country for the next couple months, but if the owner would have been willing to deal, I have a new truck. He said he wouldn't take less than $11,000...a little more than my offer of $5,000. If it's still here when I get back I'll take another look at it, but $11,000 is serious dough for a gasser, especially since I an looking for a Cummins.

Its a nice truck but not anywhere near worth $11,000 in my opinion.

That truck looks like a used government vehicle. Maybe a GSA services truck based on mileage.

White paint scares me. I worked for a local used car dealer in the 1970's. Anything that was ever beat up was repainted white. This one started out as white so a respray in white would have been easy.

So assuming a former non running V8 GSA vehicle that was sold at an online auction could have gone for $1K to $2500. Transportation to NY estimate $1K to $2,000. A white respray done + maybe some replacement parts & hammer & filler work at a dealership $1,000. Figure a $5,500 investment on the high side. $5,500 x "double your dealer investment" equals $11,000.

So let's say you buy it at $11,000. Then you still need a donor which might show up for $3,000 or you buy the parts required for $2,000 and you add your free labor and end up with a truck that you might be able to buy for a lot less money and a lot less work.

Bob, it may have come out of Fort Drum even, that's only 3.5 hours from Rochester. Getting the truck there may have been real cheap.
I paid $5k for my '97 diesel with a bad trans, and it came with an extra trans to put in. The body wasn't as nice as that one, but it was pretty good for this area.
So you can get a decent diesel truck for $5k, just be patient and keep looking.
