How are most folks doing crew cabs

Postby Dodgecrawler2011 » Thu Oct 03, 2013 8:04 am

Kinda been looking around seems to go both ways. Are people putting the cummins drivetrain in a gas motor truck or modifying the cummins frame. What are pros and cons to both and differences in the frames. Looking at doing a crew cab short bed

A crew cab frame is plenty strong enough.........just make sure you're running a dana 60 up front and you're good.

If you're like me.........you simply put the crew cab frame on whatever you have and then run a flat bed. My dad has an 85 crew cab on a 91 std. cab frame.......works out to be a 5' flatbed. We did it that way because swapping bodies is a lot easier than swapping everything else over and the short wheelbase is nice up here in the mountains. (hence why I built an RC)

I am converting mine to 4wd and putting a Cummins in it. Also mounting a utility bed on the back. Have to move the rear axle back about 4-5" since the bed is for a 60" ca.

Mine started as a 2wd dually. Now has a Cummins, 6spd, 60 front/80 rear, 205. Bought a 93 donor truck and cut part of the front frame section off of the donor to make templates to make and drill the holes for the 4wd front end. Also used the the front 4wd crossmember and engine crossmember. Modded the stock trans member for the 6spd and used a 2nd gen trans mount.

Pulling the dually bed, for a good used aluminum flatbed and 7" stacks off of a Pete. lol
NEW- '82 CREW cab dually. Cummins, NV5600, 205, D60/D80. :D Work in progress......

'93 W350, CTD, ext cab, 5spd., HTT modded H1C, 4" exhaust, Kelderman single bag. 537k and counting!

SOLD- '92 W250, CTD, ext cab, 5spd

SOLD- '99 3500, SO CTD, 5spd

Traded off- '97 3500 CTD, 416hp/892tq.

due to being a car hauler
we put the cummins in the crew frame

and with rust removal, married a 92 club cab (Cummins)
to the 73 gas cab, added the LE package

now, looks factory, under the hood

I've got a 93 w350 std cab and a 93 d350 ext cab frame that I'm cutting and splicing to make a w350 8 ft bed dually. I have a 96 dually that the p-pump engine, 47re converted to rh and dana 80 rear are coming out of. I'm also using the wiring harnesses, dual batteries, a/c system and radiator-intercooler out of. I removed the whole radiator support from the 96 and cut the 93 support to splice together. Lots of work but I only plan on doing it once.

Lol, that's about right. Actually I'm here almost every night but I don't post much. I'm more of a casual observer.

I used the 85' Crew's frame, body, and sheet metal. I just switched in all the guts from a 92' that was wrecked. It was easier than I thought and works great. 20k+ miles since it was completed. I will be converting it to 4wd in the future which doesn't appear to be too complicated.
