Ramcharger/diesel

Postby Jer12377 » Mon Oct 07, 2013 10:21 pm

I bought one of the Military 89 Dodge tugs for a body parts truck for mine a few years ago. The cummins and automatic work great in it so, I was thinking of getting a Ramcharger and swapping the engine and transmission about the same time I'm changing parts on mine. I drive a Jeep Cherokee now as my daily driver but, I'd like something diesel, automatic, 4x4 and also, something to replace my Jeep/SUV. I get 20-23MPG and thats around what I get in my 350. So has anyone done this and what do I need to know? Thanks!

The only questions I have right now are:
1)will the transfer case out of the RC bolt right up to the 727 in the tug and work?
2)will the axles that come in the RC work with the Cummins? I think front is a Dana 44 and rear is a Dana 60.
3)do I have to strengthen the frame in any spots?
Thanks

Frame will be fine.

Axles.......there is a reason that they never put anything but a dana 60 under the front of a Cummins. It will hold....but it's just not right.

Transer case will bolt directly up (assuming the tug was 4x4)(otherwise, you'll need a 4 wheel drive tranny).....but once again, you will probably want to replace it with a 205 after a while. The 208 cases just aren't that strong.

Now......if you want a stock height, stock tire size, daily driver that doesn't get beat on EVER (incluing towing)... the stock drivetrain will hold up.

Yes, stock and daily driver but, I might tow with it. I don't plan on doing any mods to the 6BT either, except maybe a gov spring. I still have the dana 70 out of my W350. Is that a bolt up to the RC?

All of the diesel running gear is a direct bolt on.

The 70 is a dual wheel axle. It won't be to wide to fit the tire in the fender wells? I'm pretty sure I can get a single rim on it...

It will stick out. Dually axle is 4" wider then a single wheel I believe.

Thanks. I think I'll look for a single wheel set or a donor truck while Im looking for a good RC then.

Some of the later wheels (01+) with the 6" backspace would probably work okay with the DRW axle. SRW axles are already narrower than the front.

I'm doing a RC also... D250 style. Have to get back at it - as soon as I get some of my other crap finished off. :/

To make things really simple look for an earlier Ramcharger without the PCM. That way all the gauges and electronics won't be so much of a pain. I am doing a 92 RC CTD and I didn't swap the dash harness over. It was a pain to cheat the gasser system to make the OE gauges and ramcharger electrics work with the Cummins engine bay harness. It can be done, but time consuming

Ya.... it is by far the easiest to just swap over all the internal stuff from the diesel. The dash harness will directly plug into the door/speaker/heater assembly of the RC.

The only thing on my entire rig that is from the RC is the actual body itself, and then the speaker/door/heater wiring harness...and ..... I think that's it.
