1979 dodge warlock

Postby ssd » Tue Oct 15, 2013 9:36 pm

Hi everyone this is my first post and I am hoping that no one has asked this very same question.
I was wondering if you guys could give me a heads up on what is too be expected with the project that I am wanting to do. I have 1979 Dodge warlock with a 360 and a 727 trans with what I think is a 203 transfer case. full time 4x4. I have found a air to air cummins I think that it came out of a 97 or 98 dodge. Question is will this cummins bolt into my drive train? I know I will have to beef up the 727 from what I have read and maybe an adapter plate. But I can't see not swapping this out I have found the motor for a really good price and the gas milage on the 360 sucks!!! I was hoping for at least 15-18 mpg out of the cummins. what do you think?

This is a really nice truck and I think that it would be cool to put a cummins in it! I can post some pics if you guys want to see the truck.

Thanks,
Shane

No the Cummins has a specific bell housing. You will need to find a 727, 518 or 47rh.

Youre also gonna want to beef up the axles. That 44 wont like the added weight for too long. Fwiw, i can pull 22mpg highway with my club cab 4x4. 18 should be easy for you. Good looking truck!

So will the gasser 727 tranny bolt on to the Cummins? I read all over that people are using them for the cummins but I can't find the diff. between a stock 727 gas and a stock 727 diesel.

No the gas trans won't bolt up.

yeah it is super clean, fresh rebuild inside and out fresh paint and the whole nine yards. We just got done with it at the beginning of the year. I am very proud of it minus the gas milage lol...

Best bet in the long run in many cases is to try to find a wrecked or rusted out CTD donor truck so you have all the needed drivetrain parts in one factory package.

Otherwise a 47RH trans, good diesel spec'd torque converter, adapter plate if engine or trans doesn't already have one, upgrade axles, beefier u-joints, driveshaft to fit, proper motor mounts [MANY options there], upgrade springs to handle the considerable extra weight, clean out the fuel tank and run larger fuel and return lines to feed the diesel [can use current gasser ful line as your diesel return line], preferably an air/air I/C, exhaust system upgrade to 4", added gauges like pyro and boost. Pyrometer can be the difference between a happy diesel or a very quick diesel death so it's best to install one right from the first.

It's a pretty large project overall and with all the change$ required you can see that it might be best to buy a donor truck.

Diesel's lower rpm range calls for an o'drive trans to be happy at highway speeds.

Did you ever decide if you were going to convert it?

Yes I do plan on doing this conversion just looking for the donor truck, far and few between where I live in Eastern New Mexico.

You'll have better chances and probably much better prices looking for your Dodge Cummins donor truck over in Texas.

Did you ever do the swap on the truck? I am currently doing one myself. It will probably debut at SEMA this November.
