1973 Crew Cab F350 Body Swap onto 1989 D250 CTD

Postby Mckinney » Sun Dec 01, 2013 9:57 pm

I am a new member and thought I would post up my conversion. The previous owner swapped this crew cab f350 body onto a extended cab 89 D250 frame and drivetrain. He then cut the long bed from the ford down to about 5' and put it on the frame. It actually fits very well for what it is. I'm sure many of you think the super short bed it useless but I live in the crowded Santa Monica beach area with only street parking so the mini bed is perfect for me right now. The next major step I'd like to take with the truck is a 4x4 conversion but I'm not sure if I will use the stock w250 parts or use a dana 60 from a newer truck and get a driver drop transfer case. Any suggestions?

It has a the 727 3 speed and I'm picking up a gear vendors unto this weekend. The rear end is a dually rear end from a 3rd gen truck. It has been poorly repaired on one side so I will be putting a stock rear end in that I will also be picking up this weekend. I love the truck the way it sits but I want the 4x4 capabilities

If you have a first gen frame, the easiest is do a first gen front axle. They are stout axles. If you are lucky you will find a ford dana 60 which would be nice having a driveshaft on the driver side so you don't have exhaust clearance issues.

I would like to get a driverside drop just because most modern axles are that way and future replacement would be easy.

There are plenty of parts available for the D60, in any configuration. Use the Dodge D60, as the spring pads are in the correct spot and it is about as easy as it gets for a conversion. The Ford D60 is more expensive, and the mounting pads for the leaf springs are further apart than the Dodge or GM version, which are different too...36"+/- for Ford, 33+/- for Dodge and 32"+/- for GM. Yes, the drivers side drop might be nice for clearance reasons, and the reverse rotation of the Ford D60 gains some clearance under the pinion, but that's about it. Since you already have a Dodge frame, the Dodge D60 literally bolts in when used with original spring hangers...which can be had from any 4x4 truck.

You've convinced me. This is definitely a K.I.S.S. moment! Thank you. Now to hunt down a 4x4 truck

That is one clean crew cab. I plan on doing a super short bed on my f350 it's a little hard to fight a titanic length wheelbase when on the trails around my house. Did you ever purchase a gear vendors? If not have one I'm looking to off.

hey Mckinney, you sure did a great job with your truck. everything looks like it was meant to be that way from the factory as far as shortening the bed, etc. the cummins is really a great motor which is why i bought a '91 4x4 long wheelbase dodge with the 12 valve motor. i have a 67 powerwagon "wide hood" civillian version that i'm going to mount to the frame when spring hits. we've been stuck pretty much in the winter wonderland even here in oklahoma. 4 degrees as i type this. congrats on the job you did with your truck, it's really looking sharp.

Sweet truck, be careful with those small pieces of cab trim. I bet they are near unobtainable.
