my 67 cummins powerwagon

Postby 67 powerwagon » Fri Jan 17, 2014 4:36 am

this is my first post here. hi guys, i bought a 67 powerwagon, civillian version, a few months ago and it is 4wd with the transfer case weighing likely as much as the 318 motor.
i knew i wanted a 12 valve cummins in it, but after figuring out it'd cost me around $3k for a decent motor, another bunch of dough for the bellhousing, clutch, etc....etc, i decided to do it a different way. so i jump to tulsa craigslist in search for a cummins powered 4x4 dodge truck. i bought a '91 long bed 3/4 ton dodge, 12 valve motor, 5 speed manual trans with 4 wheel drive. my thought is that it's far cheaper to get a good chassis which is designed for the cummins as a base to start from. in oklahoma vehicles are titled to the cab or body, not the chassis. so i'm in the process of removing the 91 dodge truck body and replacing it with my 1967 dodge powerwagon body. it sure is making for a good swap for me. my hypertherm plasma cutter makes it easy to slice off the body, but retaining the firewall and floor pan from the 91 on the frame. i'm leaving a 4" flange on the firewall of my 67 and that means everything, including the clutch, steering, and thankfully the a/c will still be in place when i weld the remainder of what i need of that 4" firewall flange to the remaining 91 firewall and floor. its the easiest swap i've ever encountered and is turning out great. the wiring should be easy enough, i'm quite familar with automotive wiring, as i've been fabbing old hot rods for several decades. this old dodge powerwagon is truly a "hairy legged meat wagon from hell".

Sounds cool! I know what you mean about those NP201 TCs. They make great ballast!

i wish i knew how to post pics of my old powerwagon, but i guess i don't have enough posts yet to allow me to do it. it's the type that the us forrestry used and the military, but not the needle nose "mash" ambulance type of powerwagon. it's got the broad hood and basically the same body as a 67 dodge pickup, with the hellacious strong chassis and big axles. the tc must be about 2 1/2 feet looking from behind lower left to upper right view and about 2 1/2 feet long. so i decided to not use it in my 67 powerwagon. instead i'm using all the chassis and running gear from the 91 cummins powered dodge 3/4 ton 4x4 truck with the 5 speed trans. this should have an overdrive compared to what my 65 originally had=the 4 speed. i'm really excited to get it done, but would love to post a picture or two of it as it sits now. any ideas as to how to accomplish that?

well now that it's starting to warm up, i've been getting all the stuff ready so i can remove the '91 cab and bed from the chassis. i'm really excited to envision it taking shape as a '67 cummins power wagon. 4:10 gears and the getrag 5 speed, i'm thinking something in the line of 31-32" tall tires so i can cruise at 65, 70? also, where's the best place to get a barring tool for turning the motor over for access to the 2 bolts behind the cam gear? i figured while i got it stripped down it's the time to do the kdp thing.

Probly from Geno's: http://www.genosgarage.com/59L-ENGINE-B ... wDTJ4WLITA. Or use the alternator bolt with serp belt installed, or a crank bolt or flywheel bolt to rotate the motor. I generally use one of the above, but there are times I'd like to have the barring tool just to help hold the motor in place while torquing the flywheel.

Mine is pretty wound out with 33s with the getrag and 4.10 gears at 70. I am going to be swapping them out for 3.55s real soon.

thanks for the information on the 4:10's and 32-33" tires faughtalexander. looks like i'll be getting the 4:10's swapped for 3:55's because i want good fuel mileage. i have a question about the getrag 5 speed transmissions. are they set up where first gear is a granny gear and not used for anything other than very slow speeds? i mean, for driving regular, do you take off in first, or bypass first and start out with second like the old chevy's that had a super deep first gear?

Yep, 1st is a granny. I had 4.10s once. Almost sold the truck. For a 33, 3.55 is surely the way to go. I have 255/85-16 (roughly 33.5") with a getrag and 3.55s, it runs great and will pull down 22mpg on summer fuel.

thank you for the quick reply rumblefish. i figured the 4:10's would be low geared even with the 32 or 33" tires, but i am looking for fuel economy while doing highway speeds. i am wanting to keep the motor in it's happy range rather than being wound up so tight. this is the information i was looking for, thanks again.

Second is just about granny in mine. Unless I am taking off up a hill I usually start in third.
