1997 F350 Conversion in the works....

Postby Got Smoke? » Sat Jun 14, 2014 10:37 pm

Well I run hot shot with my 97 Ford F350 7.3 5 speed. You can see all of my mod's in my signature. I've been a Cummins guy for a long time, but when I got started in this job I needed a 1 ton dually for a good price. I managed to pick this truck up from a buddy who didn't know what was wrong with it (needed an IDM) for $3,000. $100 IDM & a $60 starter rebuild later I had a 200,700 mile power stroke I needed to whip into shape for road running. I dumped another $3,500 in the mod's in my sig along with ball joints, tires, tags, insurance, hauling supplies. So far I've put almost 50,000 miles on it since last September, and it has done extremely well. Never left me stranded but I've had a few small repairs along the way. I just hate leaving out for 600-800 miles one way away from home with so many electronics on the engine so I started looking for a 12 Valve here and there. Luckily this 93 bus motor popped up on Craigslist last week for and I snagged it up for $400 because it had been disassembled and sitting out in the weather. I got a late start this afternoon but I got the rods, rod caps, and main caps all blasted tonight. I'm hoping to get the rest of the it done tomorrow so I can send it out the machine shop and see just what I'm working with. This isn't going to be a quick swap, but for now a rebuild on a budget thread and eventually a conversion entirely. At this point I'm kinda undecided on a NV4500 or a 47RH.... my ZF5 is already scratching in 2nd and I'm not spending $600 to rebuild it on top of a $700 adapter. I think I could almost build 47RH that would hold for that... maybe a little more if count a nice trans cooler. lol

Rough looking stock bus motor pistons... 3 had cracked around the cir clips. I'm planning on running small bowl pistons anyways

Keep compression up. Going to get a set of 215HP injectors get them rebuilt by a local buddy and run them. No need for large bowls

I would still go with the 89-91 pistons. Doesn't take much to spray outise of the bowl on the 91.5-93 pistons.

I've had the pipe dream of putting a 10 speed O/D in a pick up for some time. Even at 300-400 horse, the stock clutch should hold. Outside of the cross member, you can use OE parts. No complex cooling system needed. You'd always be in the power band too. Simple and overbuilt, so it should be reliable.

I've not priced parts tough.

Got some more sand blasting done yesterday... some good some bad. Got the camshaft, manifold, and started on the block. Some looks good and some looks pretty bad. I'm hoping the block will clean up well with a .020 bore.

Camshaft and gear looked good

Pump gear not so much....

Here are the main "bad" looking cylinders. In order 1, 3, & 4 blasted and hit with a heavy does of WD40

Hoping to get the block and the head blasted and off to the machine shop by the end of the week. I have to get back over to the guy who I bought the motor from sometime turns out the crank wasn't on the pallet so I have to go back and get it. I have a load headed out to Detroit tomorrow night and just discovered a leaking plenum on my Ford! Dang V8 diesel problems...

i'm 99.99% sure that those pits won't clean up with a .020 bore...unless the pictures make it look worse....i have a 440 with pits about like the 2nd picture and was told I'd have to go more than 20 over...

I'm just trying to think positive on the block, wouldn't hurt my feelings if it had to go .040 over to clean up. Being an industrial motor I'm betting that its never been bored before which will help me. If it comes down to either having to sleeve it or buy another block I will consider both options price wise. Since this is being built to be a reliable work engine not a hot rod I am not opposed to sleeve's. We will see I'm hoping to get it to the machine shop Monday or Tuesday this week, but I still need to flip the block over and blast it from the bottom first. It's been 90+ out side here lately so blasting outside sucks!
