GMCummins ?

Postby Arnold Layne » Thu Aug 14, 2014 3:01 pm

Okay boys, I'm going out to look at an '86 GMC dually, 75K, super clean 454 automatic truck. My question is how bad is a Cummins conversion in one of these?

I'm assuming it's a 2wd? If so, check out this thread:

It's not all that bad to do. The absolute worst part is fitting a 2nd gen intercooler/rad/aftermarket condenser fit in the core support. Making the engine mounts using factory gm mounts is ok but you'll need to buy Polly mounts or they will not hold up.

Well, I bought the GMC. It is really pretty clean with original miles showing, zero rust, but man that 454 and automatic just doesn't cut it. And Thanks for the link, it's going to take a while to read it all.

Put a 4 speed in it and then drive it, then the 454 will impress you! ;)

Oh gee Pete,.......I mean, it's been a week now and I just don't know what to say!!! Prior to my introduction to a new D350 in '92 I pulled backhoes with a '77 GMC 454 4-speed, it was a good quality product in it's day I must admit but it's day has passed. I am going to cherry this one up a little and try to sell it whole, if it won't sell we will maybe have a winter project. Out here in corn country a good 454 with a clutch on a pump stand will sell for at least four times what they are worth, it's just crazy.

I had an '89 club cab 8 foot box I was driving for a while. I had the JD LA, (2k lbs) in the bed, and was towing the small tag a long with the crawler on it (probably 8k) at about 70 mph when I stepped on it, and it just started accelerating. I was pretty impressed, as I had never had a big block in a truck before, and that was the 1st time towing with it. I agree, their time is past, but they were the cool thing back then!
