1949 Chevy 6bt

Postby Kroner » Sun Oct 12, 2014 9:04 pm

I'm finally going to start the project I've been wanting to do for the last few years. The Chevy has been sitting in the barn for the last 10 years or so and I found a good base in a 91 d350 last week. The plan is to put the Chevy body on the dodge chassis. I've been doing a lot of planning and should be able to start in the next month or so. The only part I'm still unsure of is narrowing the front track width by about 7 inches. I'm looking to shorten the control arms and run some rims with a lot of back spacing. So far it looks like 3rd gen rims are my best bet but I'm still looking for another option. Anyone have any advice or another option? A body shop recommended widening the fenders but I'd like to keep the Chevy as factory looking as possible on the outside. I'll get pictures up of both trucks as well as when I start doing the swap

Shortening the track width via control arms sounds like a horrible idea. You not only change the geometry of the caster angle (camber angle as the suspension compresses and rebounds) but you also lose leverage the wheel assembly puts on the springs and shocks.

I've got my friends driveline shop to help with correcting the angles. I've also looked into using a 1/2 ton lifted coil if I should need to

Sorry it's late but here is what I started with.

Probably not the best but I think I got a good deal on it. I started taking it apart this week and hopefully I will have a picture with the new cab on it in a few days.

I think I'm going to move the engine and trans back. I have about 6" between firewall and engine but I might take it back farther for better weight distribution. I was going to leave it without an intercooler but I figure I'll make some space for one if I ever change my mind.

I shortened the frame 15" to make the wheelbase 116" overall. Was a lot easier than I thought it would be. The engine was moved 11" back. I thought I would have 1 1/2 cylinders under the dash but ended up with two. The exhaust housing is about 2" from the firewall so my hole will be larger than I thought. Track width turned out much better than I thought. Once I change it over to swr, 3rd gen rims shomakes olive the problem. Anyone have any suggestions on building a firewall?
