making a new transmission crossmember ?

Postby jethro » Sat Nov 15, 2014 11:29 pm

2004 F-350 4x4 (ex-6L) with zf-6
I am coming up fast on putting the engine in. I loosened the transmission support bolts and slid the trans rearward as far as the elongated holes would allow (about an inch or a little less) I measured and got 38 inches between the trans flange and rad. Then I measured engine- back of adaptor plate to front top of fan. 38 inches. I am thinking I need at least an inch between the fan and rad to be able to unscrew the fan if I need to.

I could re-drill the crossmember holes in the frame and move the crossmember back 2 or 3 inches....... The Ford crossmember is kind of a silly looking thing- I could build a pretty strong Trans crossmmeber out of 5 inch channel iron -
and have plenty of room for elongated holes in it.......

I have seen somebody here build a front (engine) crossmember - it looked fine- any good reason I couldn't fab one for the transmission ??????? looks like it might be easier than moving the ford one......

any thoughts ?

This is in my 72 CC using 2" DOM...I have the same basic setup in a 73 Ford and it works fine behind a 460/c-6

That's an interesting approach- like a hinged- or a quick disconnect type connection there at that bolt/pin.
Did you fix it so you just put the bolt through on the last step ? (having tightened the outboard parts earlier)

Havnt started mine yet..... keep finding engine upgrades to do ! 8)

Yea, there is a poly bushing inside a piece of DOM in there. I'm boxing the frame there and still contemplating how to improve that part that attaches to the frame.
