The 4 that are now in the back I have been running for about 3 or 4 years. I don't put many miles on it though. The dig well and clean out decent. 235/85x16 E range were 178 a piece.

Good to know. I was looking at 235/85 for the rear, and 265/75 for the front. I'd read alot of people used them, but they weren't holding up to heavy trucks/loads

Well got all of the welding done on the bed over the weekend. Now its just getting it permanently mounted to the truck and wiring up the lights.

So my biggest issue right now is that when I look in the side mirrors, all I see is aluminum...

So question on tow mirrors...

Anybody ever try to take apart the mirror and just replace the chrome 90 deg bent tubing going from the door to the mirror and replace it with a longer tube? How hideous would that look and could you get it to stay tight enough that the wind wouldn't fold it in against the cab?

Years ago I made a set of extensions. I took some 1/2" (I think) pipe, welded a nut in 1 end and a bolt in the other, painted it silver and put them on. The bolt screwed into the 90 and the mirror bolt went into the welded nut. IIRC, they worked pretty good. I think they were about 6" long.

Did the same as Pete on a set of old 3 point door mirrors on my 77 W200. 7" long, used all thread to hold everything together. Looked goofy but worked.
I do know in the grote/mirror books at my Carquest, you can buy different mirror bracket/arms that are different heights and lengths, and still polished stainless to match oem brackets.

Time to weld some seagull slappers on there. You didn't want that wing glass anyway. 8)

I refuse to weld in 2nd/3rd gen tow mirrors.. just can't do it...

Where I used to work did CNC pipe and tube bending.. I still have some good friends there.. I could probably have them make new 90's and then have them send them out for chrome plating or make them out of stainless and polish them up... Might be an option..

For the time being though.. Pete's idea is sounding pretty good to get me by for the camping trip next month. 3 hour drive on the freeway without side mirror would suck.. especially towing a camper.

One thing about the stock mirrors is that they are taller than longer. So flipping the stock pipe might do the trick.

So this could be a dumb questions but how do you get the mirror side apart.. I know how to get the door side apart... Do you have to pull the glass out?

I think it clips like the door side. I have never had one apart though. Just what I was told

Are there screws thru the back of it? (side that faces the front) If so, loosen the screws and slide the head off. The screws hold a plate that clamps the bar tight. I had the other style that the mirror had a flat tab on the back a bolt goes thru.
