Project Flatbed Dually Underway

Postby Farmboy » Wed Jan 14, 2015 5:58 am

Well got the truck in the shop last night and pulled the pickup bed off of it. Figured that pulling the bed 1st would give me some space to work while doing the axle swap. So that is my next step. pull out the D70 SRW and insert D70 DRW in its place. I have to take the carrier and gears from my SRW because the DRW is empty except from the axle shafts out. That could get interesting. Might take the axle to a local shop to set the gears for me. Then after that, I start cutting the 10'8" flatbed down to the correct length....

I'll post up some pictures as I get them.

Where did you stumble onto the aluminum bed at?

My wife's uncle had is laying up against the barn not using it because it was 10.5 feet long and wouldn't fit on a normal truck... he had it on a reclaimed ambulance at one time for hauling hay but the truck bit the dust long ago..

Have to cut it out of the front between the axle and the headache rack. The axle location (gooseneck cutout, tire clearance area, mud flaps) is in the correct location from the back of the bed. So I am going to have to make 2 cuts then slide the two pieces together and weld them up.

That's what I figured but I've seen guys take the easy way and cut off the rear of the bed.

I am going to do all the cutting and prep work myself and then have a buddy that is a master with a tig welder that is going to come over and either show me how to tig or just do it for me... Maybe a little of both :D

Looks just like both sets ive had. They fit on 2wd just fine. Id leave the front caps off or machine an opening for them.

I couldn't really tell by the pic but it almost looked like there was already a hole in there for the lockout to stick through.. although machining a hole would not be a problem..

Well I got the SRW axle pulled out last night. Popped the diff cover and everything looks nice in there so that is good. My mechanic buddy is going to do the gear swap for me. I know I could get it right eventually but I am sure I would have everything out of there 10 times before I get the shims right. He has much more experience in there. And besides after I drop it off at his place I can get started on the needed fab work on the bed..

Side note: I bought a cheap saw from Harbor Freight (If it lasts me longer than this project it'll be a bonus) I bought it to do the sheet cutting of the aluminum flatbed. Used it last night to cut the U bolts from the shackles.... Great little saw cuts like melted butter..

Axle is finally on its way to the mechanic this afternoon. So hopefully some forward progress on the bed can be made now..

Let me know how that cutting tool you bought works on metal.
