New to me 89' D-100

Postby gpd605x » Thu Apr 16, 2015 1:43 am

A little back story, my ex-mother-in-law has had this truck since her father passed away over 8 years ago and it's just been sitting, rotting away. He had been in a front end collision several months before he passed. I've been trying to get the truck from her for about 7 years or so and she kept saying she wanted to keep it to tow her boat aka skiff that had also been sitting for about sitting for almost 10 years. Her mother (who technically owned the truck) said I could just have it years ago but she wouldn't budge on it so I just gave up and let her do what she wanted with it. So about a year ago, she decided to actually do something with it. She replaced the front end clip and added a new radiator and had all the fluids changed and fuel lines replaced. Finally, I got the go ahead to just come get it. So I got a U-Haul Trailer and went and got it.

It's a 1989 Dodge D-100 with a 5.2 318 V8 2WD Single Cab. Only has 49,090 miles on it. When I got there, put a new battery along with some new gas and some sea-foam and it fired right up. Going to have all new fluids again and new plugs and what not. Definitely needs some new tires lol but I can get some used ones pretty cheap. They are 205/75R15's. It's not real pretty right now but it will be when I'm done w/ it. I'll be taking the ugly grandpa camper shell off. Definitely throw some paint on there and get it all cosmetically buttoned up. It does have a good rust spot on the roof by the rain guard on the drivers side. Doing some reading, I'll have to grab a cab from a junk yard and cut it up. I'm not very mechanical but I think this will be a great start for me to get my hands dirty.

Here's a video of it starting up. Its a little rough but once it's tuned up I think it will purr like a kitten.

We pulled the wheels off and the brakes look brand new which is good. I'm still going to change all fluids and do a complete flush of the radiator which apparently someone used well water in. It's pretty nasty even though its a brand new radiator. I'll replace all the hoses and belts too, re-grease fittings and bearings which also look brand new. Hopefully I'll be able to get to it this week and give it a nice deep cleaning inside/out. I've been doing some research and saw the the wheels are 5x5.5 so I'd really like to upgrade to some newer dodge wheels. Just gotta find a decent set. I'll be posting progress this week hopefully!

Ha!

I was thinking the same thing, Dazed. First thing I did when he mentioned ditching the shell was scroll back up to his location.

Good luck with your build, man. 8)

I didn't know that was one. I prefer to find out things won't work well after I've paid and gotten them home anyway.

Cant argue with that. Not like we all havent done it!

Im a fan of the B150 Ram van wheels. I had a set on my 85 D150 and my 91 Ramcharger. A good cleaning and some paint will make that a nice little rig
