Ranger 4bt

Postby Gervais001 » Sun Nov 01, 2015 12:59 pm

Hey guys, I am new to the forum. I have recently converted my 08 ford ranger to a 4bt cummins. I am having issues with finding my true timing. Truck runs great, but I am not sure what my true timing is. I had my ve pump built by a shop. They also built the injectors(400-450%) I believe they told me. IMO thats too big for a daily driver. I am pulling 30-35psi of boost no problem all the way up to 3500 rpm. It is still bellowing a huge cloud of smoke, even at 30psi. I have gone forward/backwards with timing and to no success. I have also backed out the fuel screw and no success. As well cruise egt (105km/h/60m/h) are high (950-1000) any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm far from an expert, but I agree a 400% over stock injector is probably not the best for a DD. As in that much fuel may or may not be able to be "tuned out" enough to be sane at WOT. What turbo are you running? I think the majority of your issue is waaaay too much fuel. What other fueling mods do you have?

I have an hx35 turbo, its a ve pump(rotary). BUT i think i may have found the issue. I overlooked the low side fuel pressure, the ve pump was pulling fuel itself, my lift pump had failed. So no lowside pressure, thus not enough
Fuel for the IP to atomize properly. Will keep you posted on update, electric pump on route! Bye bye mechanical pump.

Alright, got my fuel system in and installed **FASS titanium 150** it has cut my smoke screen down to almost nothing!. Now my next issue is still high egt. 1000* at cruise. (100km/h). Wondering if the hx35 is just a tad too large for this. Any ideas? I will be advancing timing a bit to see if i can get it down some.

What gearing/tire size you running? Its possible your 4 banger is having trouble staying on the hx35 if cruise rpms are too low. An he341 would probably be a bit better match for a dd.

I am running 3.55 gears, 315/75r16. **suppose to measure 35", but true measure is 33.5". On cruise i am holding 5psi of boost, and rpm not 100% certain gotta calibrate the tach. ***cruise at 100km/h** Is 1000* too hot for a cruise egt? When i stomp it i still only hit 1400*(30-35psi). Which is normal i believe. I am wondering if I adjust the aneroid valve to a higher boost load required would limit the fuel on cruise a bit? If that would help? Also what did that turbo come off of? I also have a custom tubed manifold to make this turbo fit under the hood. If that may be affecting anything?

By aneroid i assume you mean starwheel, couldn't hurt to try tightening it up some. Stiffer afc spring is quite useful with huge injectors as well, if you have the soft pink/green spring. HE341's were on 03/04 cummins.

I am not sure what spring is inside, I sent my pump out to be built. I did advance my pump today, pushed it towards the head all the way, egt have dropped 200* and peppier. I have not touched the aneroid/starwheel/afc. I will see how it performs tomorrow in daylight. Hard to see if I need to adjust it in the dark. Currently looking for an hy35 or he431 turbo instead of the hx35. Was told they will also help egt and spool time.
