Cummins into 93 Chevy

Postby SChandler » Fri Mar 14, 2008 12:20 pm

The 6.5 died in my dad's truck again (this time due to the replacement heads not being worth much). He is debating between replacement of the motor (there is a place local that has pretty good prices on long blocks) and doing the Cummins conversion. What I need to know is what is involved. I know there is at one person on here who's done it into this body style (Fnschlaud? I think). Any help would be appreciated. The truck has the 4L80E auto transmission and is 4wd. TIA.

Do you happen to have pics of your alternator-a/c compressor setup??
Also, what did you use for a cooling fan? Sorry for the questions but just trying to figure out the small details. If you could post pics that would be great........

I made my own a/c bracket and used the stock alt location.

I am using the stock fan and clutch.

This would make for a nice write up if one of you all are interested in doing it. I plan on doing the same to my suburban.

Check out my thread...I am actually finishing mine up right now; if you have any more questions on it, feel free to ask me.

You have the 4L80E...I'd suggest getting an adaptor plate to keep the 4L80-E. I ended up using the Dodge transmission and transfer case. In order to do this, you would have to also change your front axle over to a passenger side drop axle. To use an adapter plate, you could retain the rest of your driveline as it is. BEWARE the IFS is weak enough as it is...adding 500 Lbs of motor to the IFS isn't the greatest idea IMO. Hence why I did the SAS at the same time.

The swap can be made much easier using pre-made brackets to use your GM A/C compressor and alternator...as well as motor mounts. Again...I highly recommend these, as it makes the wiring a TON easier. I can PM you the number to the guys I used...just drop me a PM.

What was suggested to me was to get the 518 trans or a 47RH with the NP 241 transfer case from the 94 and up trucks. The 94 and up trucks use a driver side drop if I'm not mistaken, which matches up with the Chevy front axle. The problem with retaining the 4L80E is that it is set up for a higher rpm range than the Cummins turns. It doesn't lock until late, it shifts at 2500 to 3000 rpm and none of the valving applies full pressure until well after the Cummins is making peak torque. You basically have to rebuild the 4L80 (including a new converter to work with the Cummins rpm range) to keep the trans from slipping itself to death. Yeah, the IFS won't take a ton of abuse off road, but for what my dad does with his truck it wouldn't be an issue. He decided to just put another 6.5 in it after we went through and looked at the cost and the amount of work to do the conversion. It just wasn't in the cards this time. Next time around, maybe.

I ended up using the A518 that came with the engine...and yes, it drops on the same side as the chevy, and will bolt right up. Building the crossmember wasn't all that hard, either. As soon as I get some pics of it, I'll post one up here for you.

Here's a pic of the GM alternator and A/C compressor on the front of my Cummins

Hey SChandler, is that a AutoMeter Triple Gauge pod - Dash mount for 98-02? If it is I am going to order that one.

I saw that at Geno's and almost picked that one up but was afraid that the contour might not fit the dash right. Where do you shop for 1st gen parts and access' that has a good selection? Most only want to carry 94 and up!

Yeah, that's the dash pod from the 98-02 trucks in my 92. The contour isn't perfect, so I hit it with the round end of a belt sander on each side to match the radius of the dash better. Also, the 98-02's have dash bolt somewhere that the mount is supposed to attach to, so I ended up cutting off that bracket and JB Welding on a couple of sheetmetal scraps to the inside of the mount and applying some strips of Velcro to it to hold it to the dash. It works OK, but it's not perfect.

Sam, if your dad hasn't bought an engine yet tell him to check out heath diesel. They are up around Seattle, I think, and they are supposed to be some of the best when it comes to the old gm diesels. If you ever do talk him into doing the cummins swap I think your best bet would be to buy a whole truck and take off parts as needed.

He bought another engine and got it running a couple of months ago. We kicked around the idea of using the motor out of my 90 as the donor. The problem with that is that the motor has 550k miles on it and it is a manual, so we still would have needed to source an auto and the Dodge front half of the transfer case. He would have wanted to have the Cummins rebuilt before putting it in his truck, so there was another expense to the swap. I found out about Heath Diesel a year or two ago when I was looking for some information for him. I think that's where he got the new exhaust system that he put on the truck when they put the new motor in. I thought it was hard finding parts for our trucks, try finding hop-up parts for a 92 6.5L GM diesel. I don't think they exist (outside of the exhaust system and custom made stuff).
