'66 Chevy

Postby peobryant » Fri Jan 02, 2009 1:37 am

My dad has a '66 Chevy Truck that currently doesn't run. I'm not even sure what motor is in there any more, but it ran, until the wiring harness caught on fire.

Anyways, I was thinking of telling him about a Cummins Conversion, but want to know a little about what is needed. I will try to get some pics up, but I will warn you, she is rusty, and not one solid color.

Thanks

What type of truck is this 66? If a half ton, you will need to go with a 4B for sure. If a 3/4 or 1 ton, it may work, but you'll need some beefing in the front suspension.

Other than that, it is a simple engine- just need the alternator wiring, and a wire to run to the shut off solenoid (if you choose to run it with that- if you do the pull cable, you wont even need that).

There is a guy in Kansas that picked up a 1st gen W250 and just set his 65 body and bed over on it. Worked pretty good and I may be doing it myself with a 66 GMC in the not to distant future, hopefully. If that is an option, I could look up where I found him. I think he has been on the Cumminsforum with the truck. I have some pics of the truck if you want to see it send me your email. I bought my 93 for the sole purpose of using the Cummins for a 66/87 4x4 project, but now I really like my 1st gen and think I'll need to find another Cummins. Good Luck.

Just a little more info. When I said that he just set the 65 over on it, I did not mean it was that simple of course. There is some work involved, but is an option possibly for you and your dad. I just meant that instead of trying to install the engine in the old truck with all the frame, suspension, etc mods, he opted to go with the complete Dodge powertrain being modifed, and ended up with a much later model running gears to by parts for and a 4x4 to boot. You could also use a 2x if wanted. Good luck.

Even if it is a half ton all you would have to do is toss some big block coils in it out of a 68-72 and put some upper a frame shafts and bushings out of a 73-87
