First Gen into a 32ft Coachman

Postby Caseyb85 » Fri Oct 30, 2009 1:00 pm

Hey guys I've got a 93 first gen engine that I am wanting to put into a RV. It's got a 454 and a turbo 400 in it now but I want some fuel mileage and better reliability. The engine is in stock form now but I am looking for ideas for performance parts. I am wanting to make at least 325hp with this motor but i am going to be towing a 4x4 toy behind me also so it needs to be reliable for the long haul towing. I need some suggestions on my turbo and injector selection and the transmission selection. I already have the original 518 from my truck but it is 4wd. Any opinions on this would be greatly appreciated.

You are going to need an Intercooler for it for sure. There are a couple of guys on here with motorhomes. One put the 6bt in his Travco, the other guys came with it. The factory one got upgraded to an IC. His EGT's were hot most of the time. He'll poke his head in here soon and can tell you more. ;)

I have the original intercooler but I have been checking out some air to water intercoolers also. I found a few on ebay that have .2 psi pressure drop and can hold up to 70 pounds. I was wondering if anybody knows of anybody using them on diesels? Also I have been pondering holding out with transmission and getting a 6speed allison.

Thanks guys I want all the opinions I can get so keep them coming :)

A stout built re47 would do it and wouldnt be as much as an allison, i think you could get it done for $4,000 and you would be set ;)

you could use a 47re and use a manual valvebody in it. most of the really strong stuff (input shafts, etc) are for the RE. just an option as the RE is easier to find.

Nope, just the 1st one. The 2nd is a joke, I stole the line from my buddy, who lives by that motto.
I'm actually really good with electrical stuff, it stimulates my mind. Kinda like porn. ;)

You could use an Allison 5 or 6 speed to give you better shift spacing.

What type of Chassis? If it is on a P32 with front coil springs then engine weight can be a problem.

I have an Allegro that came with an up front 5.9 and an Allison 545 which is a 4 speed. Most places I can keep up to road speed with the basic mods for a 1st Gen.

If you are in it for the fun or you live in a state where Diesel is less than gas then go for it, but it is a major project.

Standard trans is not that bad an idea if you like to shift, and an engine brake will work well, but ther are auto setups that will also work.

There are lots of Diesel motorhomes out there, low mile, pushers mostly, that sell for less than the conversion might cost you.

Good luck.
