Weekend work update:

I got all the rivets removed and holes drilled for the 4x4 conversion and I made a nice pile of 2wd scrap for the scrap guy when he comes by.

I am trying to get the frame down to the sandblaster tomorrow. They have a 3 week back log so between taking a break for the Holidays and waiting for the frame I won’t have much progress to report on.

On another note, is anybody running the NV5600 in a first gen? I am curious about the transmission fitting in the tunnel and if there will be any clearance issues or not. I have seen a post that a 1” body lift was needed and then found another that said it fit in. Any ideas?

Phillip and Swank both have 6 speeds and I remember there was clearence issues. There is also a couple more members here with a 6 speed, but they escape my small brain.

Philips is a G56 from a 3rd gen, not an NV5600. ;)

Yes, but lugnutz was asking about the NV.

Not really anything worth mentioning. I’m still waiting on the frame to come back from sand blasting.

I got the rear axle, transmission, and core engine over to the shop and torn down and also picked up the leaf springs from the spring shop. I also got the parts truck completely gutted and had what was left of it hauled off.

Mostly just getting parts cleaned and prepped for paint before the frame is done.

I have looked for the weights on the Cummins engine components a few times and could never come up with real good answers. So, while I had the engine apart I took the opportunity to weigh the pieces.

The camshaft, gear, and the lifters -- 22 lbs.
Crankshaft and gear -- 120 lbs.
6 Pistons and connecting rods -- 48 lbs.
Bare block -- 265 lbs.
Cylinder head with valves, springs and rocker arms -- 142 lbs.

Grand total of 597lbs.

Attached the bare block to the transmission to install the transmission crossmember when the frame shows back up.

I think a complete dressed wet engine is like 850-900lbs. That includes the flywheel and accesories.

Yup! Pretty much....It was a core engine I picked up to rebuild for the crewcab but later found a P-pump core. I took it apart trying to lose some of the weight and it makes it easier to move around. It will need bored anyway if somebody rebuilds it.

I took it to a friends shop and he threw it into the parts washer to get rid of all the oil and grime. I rattled canned it just to make it look a different color than the frame will be because it was originally black. That's not the final color, it was just something laying around the shop.

I got the call today that the frame is done sandblasting. Going to get it tomorrow... :D

Okay, guys, I'm finally getting back to the project and making a little progress. I got the frame back from the sand blaster and then promptly got distracted with cleanup duty from mother nature which lead into an early spring clean-up.

The frame is in primer now and I am trying to get color put onto it this weekend. Will see what happens.

I agree with you, it is a huge project and I have often thought, “What am I doing”

But, to keep my sanity, I’m trying to break it down into separate sections, such as painting the frame assembly, than moving onto the front suspension, than rear suspension and so forth. The drive that is pushing me is with the completion of each section, I than get to bolt it to the frame. I guess kinda like putting the plastic models cars together when we were kids. That makes it easier for me to keep on track and stay focused.
