Turbo options, 6.2l diesel

Postby matthewh » Wed Aug 13, 2014 1:52 pm

Trying to turbo the 6.2 I swapped into my M37. Have complete turbo setup off a '97 burb, running the GM-8 turbo, which is waste gated. Issue I'm having is the cast exhaust elbow, that points the exhaust right into my fender, as well as the wheel well not having enough room for some 3" exhaust tube. Was gonna build a new elbow, but the waste gate flapper is built into the elbow.
So, what are my options as to different turbo's I can run in its place. I have a couple Holset H1C's lying around, as well as an HX-35, but I'm limited to 10-12psi before the rod threw block light comes on.
The Holsets would solve the exhaust issue, but not sure what issues will arise once running it. Just worried I'll get out and on the first full throttle run threw the gears, I'll grenade 3yrs of work.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure a popular upgrade to the 6.5L is an HX35.

That said, the turbo you have is not a GM specific turbo. It looks to be very similar to a Garrett GT2876R. So look for a GT28 exhaust flange. They're a popular import turbo so finding a flange is no big deal.

10 or 12psi before blowing up seems very optimistic. I've always heard 6 or 8,then again I could be confusing the ol ferd 7.3idi.

Seems 8-10 is ok, with spikes to 15, but unless there's major engine upgrades, there not longed for the world. Friend was running a constant 15psi on his stock block, with wot of 22, eventually snapped the crank, but he believes there were.other factors at play.
Either way, I'm stuck making fender mods to run the gm-8 turbo, or trying to get that HX-35 to work. I kinda placed it next to the flange, and nothing seemed to line up. Mainly the oil lines, they weren't even close to being where they should to properly work. I'd have to clock the front housing, no biggie, but the oil feed lines seemed out of the angle range.
Its an industrial HX-35, maybe that's the issue

Hx-35 is a decent option. I've seen several guys running over 20 psi for extended periods of time with no issue yet. The oil drain line does line up and the feed line needs an adapter to fit and you will need to make an exhaust adapter to hook up to the downpipe.
96 converted to ve pump because p-pumps are overrated, always testing/playing with parts to get it running better.

I did alot of research, and found that while the HX-35 was indeed a great upgrade as well, it lent to other issues I wasn't willing to deal with. First off the turbo itself is physically bigger, which doesn't help in a engine compartment already stuffed full. I already notched the fender to clear the GM-8, but the HX-35 would have required filler panel and hood mods as well.

2nd, I'd like to keep the boost levels around where the factory settings are. Maybe tweak it alittle, but I want something reliable, which was the reason for the engine swap in the first place. Running an HX-35 at such low pressures seems like a waste, plus, seems id need to purchase an external wastegate to get reliable low psi. I'd rather save the HX-35 for the dually

I think I can "Lobster Back" the exhaust and get it to fit where I need it to alot easier than getting a different turbo to work

So cause I can't leave anything be, id like to bring this back up for discussion, but more on theory than anything.
Could you take say a H1C turbo, slap a 16cm housing on it, and tweak the fuel to boost only to say 12lbs? I realize a stock 21cm housing would suck terribly to spool, even with the fuel cranked up, but since it doesn't have a wastegate, I'm wondering if I couldn't decrease the exhaust housing and tailor the fuel to keep boost low. Just a thought
I did get the GM mounted, and all plumbed in, but not happy with the finished result im the exhaust dept, all due to that cast elbow the gm turbo uses

I think with more displacement and higher rpms you might be better off overall with the 21 cm. Unless you stay under 2300-2400 rpm, might be hard to keep boost down. I could be wrong though. I had a NA 6.2 once, and I revved the piss outta that pos.

I was gonna try it with the 21cm housing, as that's what I've got and see how it works. But as a theory, if I regulate the fuel, either by me right foot, or physically turning the fuel screw back out, I can control the amount.of boost I should see?

Went to school with a friend who put a banks kit on his (though to be fair to the 6.2 he probably stretched its legs......frequently), and ran it at 15 psi. A year or year and a half later it was increasingly hard to start so they tore it down. 7 cyl walls had hairlines visible to the eye.

I ended up removing the turbo and going N/A. The turbo was causing to many issues with wiring especially the glow plug harness and starter, as well as the elec harness that ran along that fender. Basically just ran outta room, and decided it needed to go. Still gonna keep the cross over I built, as well as the custom intake setup, so not all is wasted

Idk, haven't finished the truck yet. Theoretically it should. Running 9.00x16 tires, with 5.89 gears and a 700R4, puts engine rpm at ~2300 @ 60mph. That's right in the power band of a 6.2
Well see, built it more for fun than mileage, but it'd be awesome if it got mid teens

Finished product will be awesome I bet. I think the 6.2s sound a lot better than ford idi's too

Both ford and chevy v8 diesels make my ears bleed. The worst is a ps 7.3 with straight pipe.

So wheres pics of this project? Im bored at work today lol
