I have an 85 300td with the 617 turbo and have driven 240s. I have no experience adding a turbo to a 616, but from reading I remember you have to do some machine work and swap pistons to accomodate the squirters and the pumps are driven differently so they dont swap over. The 616 and the 617 definitely dont offer the return on efforts that turning up a cummins does. Are you doing anything with the pump? Youll definitely want to monitor egt. You can find pump tweeks at superturbodiesel.com and find write ups of swaps.
My $.02, Id rather deal with making the turbo 617 fit than trying to make a 616 perform like one.
