The start of machine work!

Postby m880cummins » Fri Nov 02, 2012 5:04 pm

I dropped my block off at my Dad's friend's place who builds HP diesel pulling tractor motors. He's giving me a heck of a deal and is a private business. He's planning to bore the block, hot tank and then cut O rings INTO the block. Several other things will be done as well (balancing, polishing etc)

I see a great benefit with O ringing my block rather than the head because the o rings will be PERFECT alignment with the bore with the setup he uses and since the gasket is located with the block rather than head, the o rings with the gasket rings will be centered. Should be able to hold quite a bit of boost this way.

Now,

I am running studs for the head but is it necessary for main and rod studs? I'm doing 4-500hp streetable P pumped. His opinion is if I need main studs, I'm building an engine that is overkill for the street. The bolts are grade 12.9. I'm leaning towards not upgrading main and rod bolts but what do you guys think? I'm looking for around 70psi with fly cut pistons and stock cam (for now). S300 turbo also.

I can't imagine you needing anything that serious on a VE truck TBH. There's no way you'll hit the RPMs needed to warrant such $$ into the bottom end in any situation, let alone for a street-driven truck.

Depending on the beadwork and cam, I wouldn't expect to be able to breach 70psi in any circumstance.

Depending on the beadwork

1. He's P7100ing it. I always thought the 12v bottom end was good for 750 hp worst case scenerio. 500hp with a P7100 not a big deal. At all. End of story. Especially with a single.

2. We don't want to hear about your jewlery Tacoclaw. Keep your girly boy stuff to yourself.

You don't need o-rings or studs for 500hp.

1. Shun the non-believer, shuuuuuuuuun.

2. darn... :(

3. I still don't see the need for that much $$ in the bottom end unless you do have plans to really run it to within an inch of it's life occasionally. Those situations would be what you would build for, not the other 99% of the truck's life.

O ring and stud the head. Easier to do it the 1st time instead of wishing you did. I'd skip the other stuff. Overkill for sure with what you want to do.

Thanks for the tips guys! I'll use stock fasteners and go head studs and o ring. May fly cut the pistons as well for a possible later cam upgrade.
