Powerstroke Intercooler

Postby dodgerammer24 » Sun Jul 22, 2012 11:27 am

I'm starting to think of some new updates for my 93 D250 and we have a 7.3 powerstroke intercooler on the shelf, but before I dig in I'd like to get some more information on the swap. I've read about 100 degrees cooler on the egt while towing. Does anyone have some more specific numbers? Does it effect boost (gain/loss)? How much cutting has to be done?

Boost drops slightly but in a good way.

Nothing bad ever comes from making charge air cooler and more dense.

The 3"'piping, larger cooling face helped me drop egts and boost. I ran a factory intercooler for a long time and thought it wouldn't get much better than that. But I was wrong. I lost about 5psi of boost and roughly 100'degrees on the pyro. I always thought oh more boost is good. Then I met Ron A. And he explained it to me as a sign of restriction. Then it all made sense, the bigger piping & cooler were letting cooler denser air in at a higher volume. Not pressure. 3" piping and a bigger air to air cooler are definate plus.

Sutter, Did you notice any change in MPG when you improved airflow?

How did you mount the A/C condenser in front of it?

I love my PS intercooler install. I got one with plastic tanks because it's what I could find in a hurry, and since it's already mounted, the aluminum tank one *should* just bolt right in. Anyway, I was able to get the condenser put in between the intercooler. Kinda like this

intercooler
A/C Condenser
pusher fan
Radiator
mechanical fan

This setup has a couple of advantages and a couple disadvantages.
Advantages:
intercooler is way up front where it gets the best cooling
looks awesome behind the grille
I fit a slim line fan in between the rad and A/C condenser in a pusher fashion with a thermostatic switch on it so it helps keep me cool in stop and go traffic.
Disadvantages:
Have to shorten the safety latch (oops)
short safety latch sucks to open the hood, forever more.

I'm happy with it, and the coolertubz p/s edition. You just need to add a couple 3" to 3 1/4" hump-type connectors and you've got tons extra breathing/cooling capacity.
