the 500HP VE club?

Postby ahale2772 » Mon Feb 13, 2012 12:31 pm

I want in 8)

Im going for 500 this summer, with the VE, and the current (clapped) 6bt thats in my truck... shoe string budget if there ever was one, probably 3000$ tops

Im not worried about "what if's" if I break, the clutch is good for 550Horse... hopefully it will meet me there...even if its slips out its last breath at 500horse

essentially... im looking for opinions on the easiest way to get there from where my engine is now.

as of now..

345 spring, arp 2000's, hamilton 188, 60lb springs, non-Ic injectors, hx35/12, big intercooler, unregulated 2ndgen piston pump.

looking for the most econmical way to get there, without spray.

not afraid of going big on the injectors...question is how big, 5x18? 5x20? street manners don't matter
afc? or no afc? that its the question...
big single? or budget twins?... could I spool a small s400 as a single? what would the old hx35/ht3b get me?
I will be building a 14mm Pump for the job, with a bigger fuel sysytem...probably will just be fed by a single gear/belt driven pump for now, somewhere near 50psi Inlet pressure

this will be the "going for broke" build, to finish of this 5.9 before I go to a fully built, balanced motor that will be going even bigger

this should be fun....

thinking outloud here, but you want to stay with a quick spooling charger that can flow some serious air due to the fact of the inefficiency if the VE pump at higher rpms. I think twins are the only way.

No, I should dyno it for a baseline, no real Idea where it is for power

the turbo/s will definently be the biggest hurdle, Twins will just have much less of a budget than a single..and also less of a tuning curve im guessing

6x16 or 5xbigger injectors, Ht3/4 or S4xx with an external 'gate around your HX. Get a smaller housing for the primary and don't complain when the dyno guy runs the crap out of it. :P

There will be the usual AFC tuning to mess with to get them spooling.

I kind of see your HX being a chokepoint in a 5xx quest, but depending on what prices you find for the other stuff you will end up munching up $3k pretty quick. If you have some $$ left over a 62mm secondary would probably let it breath a little better.

He doesn't need anything bigger than the HX35. To do so would hinder his spool up. Money spent on a 62 could be spent on a really nice external gate that would help with baclpressure and primary spool up while retaining a very quick spool up.

I've got the external 'gate mentioned, I just said that bumping the HX would be a good idea if he had the cash. Honestly, unless he's got a way to weld a 'gate onto one of those 3 piece manifolds one of those Steedspeed manifolds might finally be worth picking up. That bugger will take a pretty big bite out of $3k though. :?

Hmmmmmm.... so no dice on spooling a single.... ehhh?.... buler..........buler?........ really wanted to stay with a single... how about a nice s366?

and for the reccord... I was worried about popping my headgasket on the dyno after the cam... and I did pop the gasket after the swap

You're going to be in it for over a grand for a single that won't won't work as well as a set of twins for around the same price.

Honestly, if you have to wonder if your truck will spool a turbo then it's probably too big.

The turbo depends on how narrow of a powerband you are looking at. I make 450-500-ish depending on the tune-up and dyno with a 62 and no intercooler, so you don't need to go huge on the turbo. That being said, I wouldn't worry about putting a 66 on the truck if you're just looking for a number. You'll just have to shift a lot when you drive it! :D

stock manifold, weld a gate in it...if you end up needing one.
Good 5 hole injector
62mm charger, I loved my 71mm turbine on my 2nd gen, and the 68mm was fun as well. Didn't care for the 65mm...
If you keep the 35 for twins look into a small s400, or a 3b. For the price of s400's, they are hard to beat.

I dont see you having too much trouble hitting the mark

If it were me I'd like it to still be fun on the street, useable/driveable power is the best. Especially when your only making 500hp, pointless to make it a dyno queen.

I vote for a good 62mm single and a decent sized injector.

What JQmile said really makes sense to me. If you want to hit 500 hp once and and have dyno graphs to prove it, go with a single. If you want in the neighborhood of 500+ hp and want a fun truck on the street, go with twins.

Yeah, BC, but those SS's are so cool.

I probably shouldn't be in this since it's really hard for me to understand a truck in which "street manners don't matter".
