Nothing wrong with blowing a little smoke....jusr got to do it responsibly. How fast are looking to make this truck? Or just to tow real well?

not necessarly looking for speed as i have a low 13 sec silverado but more good torque while pulling and daily driving it. But i guess if i could get it to run mid to low 15s id be pleased. Can i run a newer cummins turbo on it just straight bolt up?

Not speaking for oldestof11, but the notion of blowing smoke for the sake of it is generally not condoned by the seasoned diesel enthusiast. Certainly, the VE fueled Cummins is gonna blow some smoke coming online. But the better informed (IMO) will keep the smoke to a minimum (lean is mean).

You are not the 1st to come into a diesel related forum talking about blowing smoke, and you won't be the last. ;)

WELCOME to our forum! I believe (as with most) your biggest challenge is gonna be sticking to your earlier statement: " get some extra power". Once you feel the potential of these things, it's tough to leave well enough alone. 8)

Welcome! I'd fool with the pump before I spent the money on an aftermarket pin. You can get pretty far with little not alot of money with these trucks. Is it a slop-o-matic or a 5 speed?

5k is a pretty tame load

Aye. 5k is what a stock truck can handle.

Bc847 is right. I jump all over my brother for installing a smoke switch in his powerstroke. I haze and i hate it.

Hope you stay long.

Pulling 5k lbs should be a walk in the park regardless of the setup you have, but you need to make sure your brakes and front suspension are up to snuff. I wouldn't want to tow a box of Q-tips with my truck as bad as the brakes are.

In terms of power just max the pump and make sure the throttle is moving as far as it can on the pump. the 4" exhaust is good, as is a BHAF or some sort of inlet setup. A different lift pump setup would be a good idea, at least for the IP's reliability. If it's an auto grabbing a new, tighter converter will really help out in getting the power to the ground and taking a load off your cooling system.

The above won't get you in the 13's, but it will get you a solid start on a tow rig that can get around decently. Your next mods after that would probably be injectors.

Personally I think the best set up for a good driving, very strong towing, fun daily driver is:

hx35 (basicaly a direct bolt up), or s300 ($1000 or more)
4" exhaust
fuel pin (stg 1 or ground stock pin)
Big air filter
Pump tuning to your likes.

The above will make it drive like a beefed up (mildly) p pump.

na... you won't need to do injectors unless you want to run a turbo larger than a 60mm

Yes, most of the time. Shaft play is the biggest concern. Just a bit of side to side is ok because a thin film of oil coats the bearing when it's in use, but in and out play is no good. HX35s are plentiful, they originally came on P-pumped 12v's
