HX35 install notes

Postby cmann250 » Tue Oct 09, 2012 3:35 pm

I just wrapped up an HX35 install and I have some information that may be common knowledge or it may be useful. I'm sure it'll help someone down the line. :D

Since I have an auto, the F2F cooler lines were close to the compressor housing and time will tell if they will rub. For some reason, the bottom manifold to turbo studs came out instead of letting the nut back off and I couldn't find a way to fit the stud back in the rear hole because the back of the exhaust housing was in the way. I need to clock the compressor housing yet and that's done by compressing a big snap ring-type thing on the rear of the compressor housing. I used the cast aluminum elbow coming out of the compressor housing and things should line up nicely after çlock the housing. The downpipe does need to move back a bit. I only had to heat one stud to get it loose.

Other things you'll need is an oil line fitting, a drain line gasket, and an exhaust manifold to turbo gasket. There's a P/N floating around for the fitting on this site. The fitting is actually the same as the one that goes into the oil filter base.

I hooked up the waste gate, but I haven't pushed it hard enough to open it, I think. I don't know when it opens or if it even works at all.

Overall I'm happy with it. The power comes on smoother and smoke seems to be down again. I'll get everything set the way I like and I'll see how it does when I push it harder. It took me 2-2.5 hours start to finish.

Same thing happened to me when i put mine on, so i just left the back stud out as well.
The last time i checked my 351 it was like i forgot to tighten all of the bolts, and they were all finger tight  not sure if that was an oops or if they just worked loose, lol
did you have to cut some of your firewall out as well?

If a nut brings a stud out with it, just take two of the other nuts and run them into each other on the other end of the stud. Then just clamp the bottom one in a vice or the top one in a wrench layed against the floor and it should hold enough to get the nut off. I they spin tighten them into each other a bit more.

It will literally fall off there if you cherry it up with a torch and turn it off while its still red. If you don't have a torch, just keep it wet with penetrating oil and work it off.

It goes without saying that the above requires the use of some amount of common sense, but I'll say it anyways. ;)

Just rehashing some of those lessons from when Pete was in beautician school.

Nope, why did you?

Thanks for the tip Levi. I don't know why all these other guys are so obsessed with homosexuality. Perhaps they are insecure

I think the nut and stud would fit if I slid it through the hole in the exhaust housing, then set the turbo on the manifold and tried to thread it into the manifold. I have a more pressing drain line leak though. It projectile vomited oil all over the passenger side of the engine yesterday right when I found where it's gated at. I thought I blew a boot when the gate opened  New fangled technology, I swear...

Could be. I just now remembered that the stud doesn't have threads cut all the way across it, only on the ends. It's been that kind of day

Vice grips and a wrench allowed me to separate one nut and stud so I put that one in the bottom rear hole that's hard to get to. I stuck a drain line gasket in it and took a spin. 5 miles of hard driving says the drain line isn't leaking anymore.I worked up enough boost to blow a boot so I'm guessing the gate doesn't work. I think I crapped my pants when it hit 3rd and promptly popped with white smoke and all.

Nothing like a boot blowing off to make sure your heart is working! I have 2 studs that come out everytime. I just hang the turbo on the 2 that stay, start the nuts, and then put the studs/nuts in and start them. No problem, just have to be smarter than what you are working on!

Í would like you to do three things for me.

1. Make up your mind
2. Find a story
3. Stick with it

I know that we've had disagreements in the past and I was trying to be civil lately, but that seems to be a waste of time.
