Supposedly the fin and plate design is better. Mine is a 6 pass tube design with a fan.

Ain't no "supposedly" to it, they'll cool twice as well in the same amount surface area. BTDT with them on a 4L80 in a ton truck Chevy, I had an oil cooler on it the size of the AC condenser and the Trans still over heated. Took it off and replaced it with a plate style, literally A little over half the size, and the Trans never puked fluid from over heat again.

Ok so do you know of a good one that has a fan included? And 1/2" inlet and outlet?

What I found on Ebay
http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.vi ... 1022520754

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.vi ... 0745915439

The last one is pretty big,the other one would fit under your truck easier.

Reason those are better is because the fluid runs back and forth 3or 4 times more than the tube style. In other words, instead of running thru one tube bent six times, the fluid has to run thru several tubes. It just the amount of surface area the fluid and air contacts is larger.

Found this too

The derale 15850 has -8 an fittings. Aren't those smaller than 1/2"? I was under the impression 1/2" was -6 an.

-8 is a 1/2" fitting. In dash sizes, 1" is -16, so -8 out of -16 would be half of it.

A -6 is a 3/8s. If you double the /8 to getting to 16 it would make the 3/ a 6, or -6.

Just put whatever number is after the dash in the numerator position over a 16 and reduce.

-6=6/16=3/8"
-8=8/16=1/2"
-16=16/16=1"
etc....

Thanks for the clarification guys.

The Derale 15800 is not a bar type unit unfortunately.

There's a Hayden cooler in the link that I posted, but it has 3/8" push on fittings. I'm refering to the Rapid Cool on page 2. Would 1/8" really be a restriction? I understand 3/8" is 25% smaller than 1/2", but there's the same thing with 9/16" flare fittings that has a (-6) after it.

Caleb, it's more than a 25% restriction. Just because it's 25% smaller diameter it's not the same restriction. Pipe isn't like a linear measurement, it's (I can't think of the words I need here!). Another way to put it is, a 2" pipe will flow more than 2-1" pipes because of the surface area and friction on the pipe. Clear as mud?

And the one with 9/16 fittings has that as a fitting size, the hole may be -6. ;)

I comprehend that. I guess anything diesel is automatically heavy duty because no universal parts are big enough. I'd be better off going to the big truck shop than a parts store most of the time

So, I towed my truck 170 miles to the nearest approved body shop. I ended up cooking my ATF on the way there. 210-250+ in pan temperatures. I am starting to wonder if I am getting false readings as the exhaust pipe goes by that area. The truck towed pretty darn well despite the high temperatures.

Thoughts?
