Could be radiant heat from your pipe, but idk. Is the fluid changing color on you?

I overfilled it, so I will drain some out and post a pixor. The fluid on the dipstick looks fine though.

Doesn't look so good, does it? According to my records, it has 16,000 miles on it.

Thanks Levi, that was the word! I guess it wouldn't have mattered, I couldn't have spelled it anyways!

Head, that does look dark. Do you have an infrared temp gun? You could shoot the pan and get a better idea how warm it is to double check the gauge. Harbor Freight has them for about $30 on a regular basis, I got mine on a low sale for $20. It works good too.

Ok, well I will get that F2F put back in ASAP then. I did not notice any particles in it, but last few times I pulled the pan there was a grey sludge at the bottom of the pan. I read that was normal though?

It's very small, a grey film on the bottom of the pan. Last time I pulled the pan it was very negligable. I might even pull it tomorrow for s and g's, since the fluid is drained already.

I also been researching the interweb about ATF color and found out a change in color for ATF +4 is not so bad. Also, if I do the paper towel test, the fluid is still red. It's not brand new obviously, but it's not brown either. I don't think I'm in too bad of shape just yet.

That doesnt look very good to me unless the picture is deceiving. I see a lot of ATF in these trucks and when its that color its usually something burnt up... clutches, bands, whatever.

I think it's the angle. It is still red in lesser quantities. I'm going to have it flushed and new fluid put in, and the F2F cooler is going back in. It's all I can do, so if it blows up it blows up. I'll send it back for a rebuild and have it converted to 47RH.

For informational purposes, my bed mounted cooler measures 23" deep, 24" wide, and 1.5" thick, and the trans will run at about 140 degrees going 70 mph unlocked, fan on. With the fan off, temps get to 150, 155. This is just the truck, not towing anything. F2F is hooked up. Locking the TC drops temps to about 105. About 8 psi boost unlocked at 70, about 5 psi locked. To give you an idea on the F2F cooler effect on the trans, climbing a local ski hill with my truck, when it had 1 dinky electric fan on the rad, engine temps would get to second last line on the temp gauge, trans temps hit 185,190 degrees, both fans on the whole climb. (1st gear, 10 kph, 2wd) It now has a fan off an intercooled truck. Now it will climb the same hill without engine temps climbing at all, trans temps hit 150 without turning the trans cooler fan on. And imo, if you are going to tow with a non lockup auto, you should have a BIG transcooler. I need to put a 2nd fan on mine to get the most out of it, it only has 1/3 fan coverage right now. Rant over...

Thanks for the info. I am contemplating having my tranmission converted to this winter. I don't know where I will find the money at this point though.
