New (old) engine for the future crew

Postby m880cummins » Tue Aug 14, 2012 4:10 pm

Today, I bought a 5.9L cummins from a local junkyard. It was out of a Ford Medium duty truck and ran when they got it. It has the head off now and water in the cylinders. I paid $500 for the complete engine and it has a P pump as well. My guess is it should have the 215hp pump as it was out of a bigger pump and should be the automotive governor. Here's my plan and I need your help on it:

Steedspeed manifold
ARP studs with O rings
mild port job
100hp injectors
HX40 feeding an HT3B
Power stroke intercooler
mild pump work
60lb springs

I don't know the mileage of the engine but it needs bored over. What would be a good piston for the p pump with twins? Should I run an aftermarket cam?

I will drop the pan and inspect bearings and I figure if everything looks good disassemble and bore then install new bearings and run it.

SO, here's what I'm working with!

Timing case was cracked by the yard, and exhaust manifold bolts are toast. 4 of them are broken off. Has a husky a$$ crank breather on the block so I will run a billet tappet cover. Also the P pump looks good! I'll open it up and inspect it, reseal it and add delivery valves, gov spring and fuel plate. Has an air compressor on the side with a power steering pump so I will run on board air as well as power steering and hydroboost off the PS pump. Needs injector lines as well. Great starting base and is now ready for machine shop! Probably needs bored .030 or .040 over...

What are good pistons for a P pump engine with twins?

Id have that pump checked. I wouldn't be surprised if its junk if its been sitting out in the weather like that.

Looked at the pump just now. It is an 843 pump which is a 175hp pump.

I looked in the fuel inlet and it looks super clean but have not pulled a delivery valve. I am going to cap all of the holes in the pump and clean and paint strip it to get it uber clean before I check out the delivery valves. I know I need a rear half housing of the pump as the idiots at the yard laid it on its side. It is cracked right by an afc bolt hole so it isn't structural but may be an issue in sealing the afc.

Cummins oversizes are .020 and .040, then a sleeve and rebore back to stock. FYI, ;)

Thanks Pete,

Would marine pistons be a good option for a P pump engine with twins? I don't want to blow a ton of cash on just pistons and rings.

P pump kinda scares me :;-|: I think I will send it out!

Only if you intend on running marine fuel injection nozzles. Spray angle is different between the truck and marine. You can run marine nozzles in a truck, but you need to use the thinnest washers you can get, to get the tip in far enough that fuel won't spray outside of the piston bowl.

You need to anyhow. Needs to be put on a test stand to get everything balanced (even flow of cc's across all 6). A clean room is the best place to work on one as it is.

Will you get the P-pump maxed out? If not, the HX40/HT3B combo might be overkill. HX35/HT3B might be a better choice.

I agree that the pump could be dead sitting like that with no lines

also, pull the bottom end apart before you decide to stick with that engine, could be full of water

So just stick with stock pistons? I plan to run 100hp P pump injectors...

I took the rear main seal housing off and it looked very nice and clean inside. I have WD40 pooling on the pistons now to assist with breaking it loose in a few days.

I'll probably go HX35/HT3b then. If I get lucky I'll score an S300...

IF you were to not use this part, I see ONE piece on there that is worth this side of GOLD to some people.
That's the high-mount A/C compressor bracket.
Last one I had I got just north of $200 for it.

Don't let the cracked timing case scare you, if it's weldable for cheap, do it and don't worry it.

Even parting that engine out, you could easily double your money and you could put that towards a nicer one with no idiot damage. ;)

Mark.

Thanks for the tip on the AC bracket. I'll be sure to sandblast it, paint it cummins beige and watch it go on ebay!

The yard gave me a timing case to replace the cracked one. I should take the pump back and show what happened to it as well......
