Mo' Power!

Postby bubba » Wed Jan 23, 2013 8:20 pm

Hey guys I wanted to know what injectors I could run and turn my pump as far up as I can. Also, at the ragged edge of pump streetability/ reliability, what fuel pressure will I need to run, and whats a good fuel pump? I'm still trying to figure out turbo setups but twins is the direction I'm leaning in. In fact, International Maxx Force engines have a trick dual turbo setup that I'd like to jump on if I had a chance. I'll research the turbo issue but with injectors, there are just so many options and opinions that I wanted to get some advice. Also, what rpm spring would be good for a reliable daily driver? What risks are associated with running a higher rpm spring than 3200?

Injectors- 5x18, 6x16, or something similar would be as big as you need.
Fuel pressure- 10-15psi would be safe for the front seal, could go high but you run the risk of dumping fuel in the oil. If the seal goes.
Fuel pump- A1000 or AirDog or similar
RPMs- 3200 is common the, VE pumps fuels hard till about 2700-2800 rpms. They make a 4200 spring but heavier valve springs are recommended.

I had seen a 3800 spring and if the pump can pull it I'd sure love the extra rpms. I was thinkin the A1000 myself because I've had good luck with it on gas engines. Is it reliable on a daily driver? The ones I've dealt with have been weekenders lol

With anything over 3200 its recommended you upgrade the valve springs. As long as it have clean and cool fuel to the pump the high rpms wont hurt the stock 12mm pump. A1000 was common before Fass and AirDog, so it should work fine for a daily driver.

Is it mainly a tow rig or just a commuter?

Its a commuter but with me that entails frequent trips to the strip and mud hole or trail. Who makes springs for the cummins? And if I upgrade springs would it hurt to run the 4200 spring?

As I understand it the higher rpm spring will do no good because the ve will only fuel so high of rpm.

Bosch makes gov springs. You can get heavier valve springs anywhere. I got mine from industrial injection. I got a 4200 spring and love it. Going from a 3200 spring to the 4200 gave the same if not better improvement as going from stock to the 3200 spring.

So the 4200 won't hurt the bottom end? Just replace the valve springs and I'm golden?

I ran 6 months with stock valve springs. Even hit 4k a time or 2 when racing. Blew my headgasket and the pistons looked perfect.

IMO, lots of RPM and boost float valves quicker than just high rpm.

How much boost were you running when the gasket blew?

Towing. Just blew between an oil passage and coolant. No boost involved, just age.

I've heard.... that upwards of around 50psi can blow your intake valves open. So when one starts getting up over 40 psi and anything over 3000rpms.. valve springs should be installed.

Where's a good place to get the valve springs from and whats stock pounds of pressure and what pounds of pressure will I need for a 4200 rpm governor spring?

And can someone direct me to the topic that I ran across on here but can't seem to find now about free(or cheap) power that had things like adjusting the throttle for max travel and drilling out the fittings to reduce restrictions in the fuel system?

After talking to a couple people, I like Zach Hamilton @ Hamilton Cams. Had a few beers and he is not shy about telling you that something you want to buy of his is not going to work. If you have an afternoon with nothing going on, ask him about cam design and application. He will talk your ear off to no end AND buy you a beer or 2 if he could.
