Too much injector?

Postby Ram360man » Sat Jun 01, 2013 4:46 pm

Going to try the dyno tomorrow. Got my new pump installed and 5x16 injectors. Runs around 45 boost and 1400 egt. Seems low on power and smokes a lot. Spools about the same as normal. Starts hazing black as low as 10 psi. Smoke at full throttle I can deal with. Smoking going up a hill or towing I don't want though. Just wondering what I should do to make it smoke less. More timing does nothing. Less it misses and pops. Afc is up to coil bind. Thinking about turning my fuel pin back to stock for more afc control and less fuel overall. Not happy with this setup. Ran awesome with the stock injectors. Almost no smoke and same amount of power. Just not sure how to set it up as timing and afc aren't doing much. Trucks been doing this for awhile now even with the 5x14 injectors. It wouldnt start smoking till around 20 psi then though. Didn't do it before the 4200 rpm spring and Hamilton cam. Valve lash is correct and no boost leaks. Everything seems to be in order it's just not burning fuel for crap throughout the rpm range. The dyno is free but I'm going to feel like a dweeb if I run a really low hp high smoke run.

Got something to check for boost leaks with? Sounds like on to me, minus the lowish EGTs.

It's at home. I cobbled something together quick at my friends. Only held 15 psi before it blew off. Didn't have any leaks to that point. I'll check it with my tester when I get home to 50 psi though. Its definitely acting like a boost leak though. Haven't found it yet though if it is. Ill mess with it more in the morning.

Injectors are too big IMO.......... From personal experience, one is better off with smaller injectors that are made to move more fuel through a smaller hole.

Besides fine tuning your setup, I think you just plain and simple need more air. From what little I've heard of in the first gen crowd running the s363/68, it's been not all that great. Like it may light too late, accompanied by too much fuel too early in the rpm. That's a bad setup. If you added another turbo beneeth a smaller secondary you would be making a step twards a cleaner running truck. I myself have often thought about my truck, and how it would run with some smaller flow honed injectors. After my new primary is installed I'm going to give my 6x16s one more chance. Your not alone in this battle ether.

Well there was a big line for it. Dyno operator said after he ran them through he'd take more people. Did the burnout competition and got last again. Swapped tires out and went over to the dyno. Three hours of mopars in the park left and they're packed up and gone. Ran almost up to 50 psi during the burnout and hit a max of 1800 degrees egt. I'm going to swap in the stock injectors when I get home and see how they run now that they're rebuilt.
