Over under vs side by side

Postby 2uphill » Tue Jan 22, 2019 9:43 am

Ok so I have been contemplating compounds for sometime, searching some old threads, and reading/talking to various companies who have built compounds for first gens trying to learn advantages/disadvantages of the two choices considering the limited room we have to encounter with heater, front diff, transfer case, etc.,etc.,....SOOO, those of you who have them what are your thoughts?.?

I built side by side for mine. Everything fits with plenty of room, I can get the oil filter out with everything in place, only thing I had to move was the washer bottle, and I can pull the whole setup apart in about a half hour.

I did side by side on mine, biggest problem is fitting a large enough air filter in there. My washer bottle is MIA at the moment, I haven't finalized my filter set-up yet.

Thanks, Did you have to use 1” spacer off exhaust

I've done both.

First with an HT3B under an S363 (as under/over), then triples (has both under and side mounted)

Had to relocate the transmission fluid heat-exchanger to put stuff down there.

Meh, both arrangements have pluses and minuses.
- Having the primary under the secondary may make the exhaust down-pipe less complicated but then the trans heat-exchanger's in the way. If you've a manual trans, that's not an issue.
- Having the primary out to the side may make routing an air-filter feed difficult.

It's been my experience that either way, making the hot/cold plumbing compact is the real stick-in-the-mud as it were.

Thanks, I think I saw your thread on triples ( or someone’s )..I appreciate the heads up of what to expect and results of choices you are going to live with...does ex man need to be turned up or everything as is?

I don't remember! Pretty sure the small turbo is right on the manifold.

If you flip the manifold, run the secondary facing forward, and point it’s outlet down you need at minimum a 1/2” spacer. If you’re ok with a complicated secondary to ic pipe then you don’t need a spacer, or if you face your secondary backward you don’t need one unless you keep the manifold facing down.

My mess is manifold up, 1/2” spacer, both turbos facing forward. All 4” piping except secondary to ic.

Ahhh, that's why! I flipped my manifold and the small turbo faces backwards.
