Injector POP Pressure Adjustment Shims?

Postby BC847 » Thu Dec 30, 2010 6:14 pm

Does anyone know of a readily available source of the shims for our injectors? :?

Anybody recognize these Cummins part numbers?

shim# 3905156 1.00mm thick
shim# 3905157 1.04mm thick
shim# 3905158 1.08mm thick
shim# 3905159 1.10mm thick
shim# 3905160 1.14mm thick

All the way to 1.98mm thick.

Would this and that cross-over? Bosch, Delphi, etc?

Can I get some thin brass sheet stock, scissors and a nail and make some? . . . . . . no, really.

Discuss . . . ..

I think i would buy the shims needed, or have a fuel shop adjust the pop. If you have a shim cut not quite right I could see a big problem if it got jammed in there. Plus I'm pretty sure the shims are harder than brass stock.

What kinda tester do you have? Is it a home made tester. Like the bottle jack kind.

Call me lazy . . .. but I really don't feel like making one right now. Knowing me, I'd go overboard and spend more than needed anyway. Screw it! I broke-down and bought this one ~ http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... AUS%3A1123

It should serve my purpose OK. I'm more interested in the largest gauge I can get for finer resolution (this one's 150mm).

I want to establish where these expensive EDMs are at. I'd like to see how consistent things are between the set of six injectors and make them so if not, then play.
As it was simplified to me by one of the big-dawgs here; a lower POP is gonna move more fuel thus make more power, a little dirtier and it will haze more. A higher POP will clean it up at the expense of somewhat higher loads on the IP guts and ultimately perhaps less fuel than otherwise.
It seems I've read that at least one CTD owner raised his a little and picked up some power on the bottom-end of the RPMs perhaps with cleaner (more efficient) burning.

Too be sure one can dial-in the injectors for a given engine set-up much like any other part of the given engine.

Siht! I'd have spent that too. It looks safe to use as well, not at all like the bottle jack thing. Much luck on your exploration of this. Please post up your findings as I am really interested in this type of things.

I used hardware store washers when I reset my pressures. As long as you get the cheap washers, there's enough variation to give you different pressures. If you get the good washers, they're all the same thickness and you don't have enough variation...

I've been told that it's a really bad idea to use cheap washers, but considering how slobbery and worn mine were to start with I didn't make them any worse. It's been two years now, they're still working. They'll last until I get my new turbo on at least.

Interesting. And a good point about the irregular thickness ones.

I would think that as long as the metal is hard enough that with time and use, the spring didn't leave a "foot-print" in the washer (wear/deformation thus deviation), it should be OK.

-> When you did yours, did you see substantial differences in the set of six injectors initially?
Did you raise or lower the POP pressure? So what'd it do for ya? 0.1 sec off your 1/8th mile ET? Smoke went away? They made funny "farting" sounds so you put things back like you found them? :cyclops:

They were all ~20 bar below stock set-point; I put them back up to stock. It raised my idle a few hundred RPM before I adjusted it back down, so I made something work differently. Probably helped something out somewhat... Didn't notice anything on the seat of the pants though.
