Help Identifying my axle.

Postby booneylander » Mon Nov 19, 2012 8:32 am

Hey guys,

I have been rebuilding my truck somewhat. I'm planning a big trip with it and it was due for some TLC. I have been replacing all brake lines, fuel lines, e-brake cables etc.

I was taking apart my rear axle and am wanting to order wheel bearings.

The truck is a non-intercooled 91, D350 Dually 2WD Cummins.

I am trying to order the bearings but there is a different listing for D70/71 with 12"x3" brakes w/o 9000lb axle, and then a listing for D70 with 12"x3" brakes with 9000lb axle.

My question is how can I tell if I have the 9000lb axle option?

As mentioned I have 12"x3" brakes, and reading the FSM I *think* I might have the 9000lb axle but wanted to double check with you guys before I order bearings. On one side I had a "castellated" nut with an axle key and a retaining clip, on the other side I had a nylock-type nut with a locking clip that slides in, which seems to be the newer part, as that's the only style I can find to order new, I can't find the old style nut.

I can't seem to upload pics to the board but I uploaded them to a facebook album. This link *should* work.

A couple things you could try as for wheel bearings, 1. try to get the numbers off the back side of the bearings, then you could match them up by using the numbers online or at a parts store. 2. take the bearings to a bearing shop and they could match them up for you, I had to go this route a year back when I needed bearings for one of my quads, and it was way cheaper for the same bearing than what the stealership wanted. As for the bearing nut, the nylon locknut with the locking tang will work just fine, that's what I have been using for years, make sure you use a lock tang on them if you go this route as even thought the nut is a lock nut, it can and will eventually back off.

As for the axle, I am not sure on that, I am sure one of the more seasoned parts guys like Bill, Philip or Mark could help you on that...

Hope this helps ya! ;)

Well if you can tell what the gear ratio is you can narrow it down. From everything ice researched the D71 is only 3.07 gearing. The link in my sig will tell you how to post pics.

I think the link should work for everyone as far as pics go, you don't need to have a facebook account to see the pics.

I found the bearings on Rock Auto, just need to confirm whether or not the axle is the 9000lb. Unfortunately I'm away from the garage, was just hoping someone with a keen eye could point me in the right direction so I could get the parts ordered up and on their way today.

when it comes to getting stuff for our trucks and the options listed for that year, I always get the biggest listed.

At the truck this morning so I was able to check part numbers. Seems I don't have the 9000lb axle option.

The main difference seems to be the outer diameter of the inner wheel bearing, which is smaller on the 9000lb axle. Outer bearings seem to be the same.

Maybe the "9k lbs" axle is the dually or cab & chassis rear...

Mine is a DRW but yeah maybe for heavier cab&chassis apps.
