Nebraska doesn't require a title under 10,000 pounds for trailers, but they do require plates for any trailer.
Anything under 10,000 pounds they just register it as home made.

Last time I took a title in for a trailer under 10,000 pounds the gal convinced me to register it as home made because it was cheaper and she didn't have to twist my arm, but I got to thinking...
What if, on the off chance I got stopped and got Mr. Nosey :pig: and he found a VIN on the trailer?
What could he do to me for having a homemade trailer with a VIN and a registration with NONE?
Could he get me for a false registration, even though my DMV supports doing this?

Granted, the tongue on the trailer in question had been modified and there is no actual VIN showing anymore, (I checked EVERYWHERE), so it skates by as home made, but I see numerous factory built (Ergo "VIN-ed") trailers every day that have been licensed this way and I gotta' wonder what happens in a state where it matters to them?

Pics below of last week's vehicle catches.
I was considering putting 4bts into them, but the red/white one is too nice to hack up and the black one just needs some sensors or solenoids to fix the tranny, so I decided they should be left as is.

Good question. Depending on the state, there are all sorts of games one can play.

In IL, the registered weight (pickup and trailer) is added up between them. So, say for instance, you want to have 36k gross. You can get a pickup plated w 12k plates ($158/yr) and a 24k trailer ($722). OR, you can plate the truck for 16k ($277) and plate the trailer for 20k ($258).

Here, if the trailer is 10k or more, the truck carries the tagged weight and is tagged to carry the TOTAL GCVW.
The trailer still has a plate, but it's for registration only.

So, if you have a truck that has a GVW of 11,000 pounds and a trailer with a GVW of 14,000, you plate the truck for 12 or 13 ton (24,000 or 26,000 pounds) and run that way.
Any trailer with a rating under 10,000 pounds, the tag weight goes to the trailer and is taxed accordingly.

There's manufacturers who are building trailers with a 9980(?) pound capacity rating to beat the 10k rule, then you just plate the truck at, or near, the GVW marked on the door, which sort of makes the plate fees and registration cheaper, but it still means nothing in Nebraska because of the no-title rule under 10k.

IIRC, in KY, trailer plates aren't required UNLESS it's commercial, correct?
I seem to recall a guy I knew in Berea, KY telling me something like that a few years ago.

If so, there is the probable cause.

Mark.

In Ky you have to run trailer plates for farm or commercial. What gets you is Ohio and Indiana require plates if hauling out of Ky. I don't know if they make the residents but I've been pulled over in both states picking up trucks and hassled for not having plates for personal use.

I think diesel is code for charge me more. For schits and gigs, I looked up a clutch for my F250 and it was just over $100. A PSD clutch was $225

Ok does anyone have experience with mounting a 2 post lift outside? There is a local shop that has one outside and told me he has never had a issue with it. Ive thought about doing this since the county will not let me build a garage.

Andy, I had one I was going to do the same thing with.
I figured out that a pair of high-strength concrete pads, the size of the foot print on each side, about 1 foot thick, should be more than sufficient to support the lift and a vehicle.
That's over twice as thick as it would be if you had a slab of concrete instead of just the 2 pads.

If you're thinking you'll have a vehicle-sized (or more) concrete slab for rolling and parking on, then 6" thick at the feet is plenty, since the rest of the slab will help stabilize it.

There is a shop near here that has an outside life, but I can't remember if it's a 2 or 4 post. I know it must suck out there on a day like today with 30* and a brisk wind, and then the snow flurries were coming and going...... :?

I would make the pads much larger than the foot of the lift. What if the weight is more on 1 end like our cummins trucks? I saw Millers lift with my truck on it and the front was noticeably lower than the rear due to the weight and where the pads had to be. Maybe a foot wider than the base and several feet longer front to back for support. Or like Mark said, a pad is the way to go for nice working surface and maximun support for the lift. Lots of rebar and some mesh and it won't go any place.
