Tilt hood attempt #3, semi-success!

Got to looking at the bumper mount bolts and noticed a couple of them were in a suspiciously good spot. Pulled all but those two, cut that bottom lip off the fender, and boom, works like a charm. I screwed a piece of of wood between the hinges to act as the hood and help spring the bottoms out more.

It's going to need some assist springs, that's for sure, this is one heavy pig. Even without the hood it's a bear to get it started up. The rear of the fenders never fall in the same spot, which is to be expected with no bracing at all, and when you pull on the top of the core support it pulls the fenders forward. Not a huge deal, but since I'm using the forward studs that hold the fender down it pulled them right into the threads on them and you couldn't get it to tilt up. If I go to each one and pull it off the stud before I tilt it I can get it to come up with only mild struggling. Otherwise you ain't getting that thing tilted forward.

Another note, that's not as far as it flips, that's just the balance point for it so I could get a pic. As it sits it will flip all the way over and lay flat on the floor in front of the truck. I'm waiting to see what a bumper and that little valance piece below the grill will do in terms of interference.

More thoughts and experimentation later. 8)

So what is your plan for cutting the core and building a cradle for the radiator/intercooler?

Well, that's a good question.

I'm gonna take a piece of 1/8" angle (maybe thinner) along the entire bottom of the core support and cutting out the section that the radiator/condenser set in. Brace that section to the frame itself and let the rest pivot away from it.

Problem with that is that the radiator/condenser section is actually wider that those frame horns, so I'll just have to play around and see what it takes.

I'm actually thinking of bolting the center of it right back down with it's rubber-mounted bolts and possibly bracing the outer sides to each other in front of it.

Heh, I guess so. I really don't want to tear my old Dodge apart and since I'm still waiting on a blower drive pulley I'm looking for ways to keep my greasy-ass hands off the paint on this RC.

New plans are to redo this setup with the RC bumper mounts on this frame, sort it out a little, then bring the RC back down and try this out with the leaf springs, bumper, and lower grill valance in the way to see what's up.

it's actually going much smoother than I expected it to. It'll get more complicated when it mes to bracing and getting it to fall in the same spot every time and line up, and having a place for it to sit and not rattle.

Still a fun little project and it helps me practice taking body panels apart and putting them back together.

I've never been good at that stuff. :?

I plan on making mine tilt also. I'm going to cut my fenders at an angle though and leave the bottoms attached. I plan to weld flat stock on each section where I cut them and putting an alignment pin and isolator. I'm going to build a cradle for the radiator and such and run to stiffening rods back to the cab. I'm going to put a couple alignment pins in different spots. Also want to modify the fender wells to stay on the clip and rewire the front harness to hide most of the wiring and keep it back towards the cab.

I've seen a few like that, I just personally hate the extra panel it makes. If there's a reason I can't get the hood to flip almost vertical then I'll look into that as a last resort tough. The rear of the fender really hangs down in the way if you're not able to get it up out of the way.

Rode motorcycle and shot guns all day today, no progress on the truck. I'll get back on it tomorrow, I swear. 8)

After taking the doghouse off mine and see in how bad the fenders hang I would rather split the fenders.

Why not just buy a fiberglass flip front end? All you have to do is a little more than bolt on and go.

Oh yeahhhhhh, both you guys are cheap mofos!

Because they want $1400 for the clip then $1000 to ship it to me.

Heh, I didn't really want to pay just the purchase price, I never bothered asking what the shipping is. Now I know.

Pete, I can get a good idea on what it would take to make one of the fiberglass ones function with this setup without paying thousands. Once I get the kinks worked out I may set aside some funds to buy one one day. There's still the whole headlight, radiator, inner fender, any bolt-on stuff for the fiberglass clip. I guarantee that thins is far from bolt-on and go. :P

God knows there'd be nothing wrong with shedding a few hundred pounds off the nose of these trucks.
