Don't worry about not being a mechanic in the service managers job, but it does help. Our last boss came from a car dealership, and had no idea what a loader or dozer was. He also couldn't change a brake line when his truck blew one. He was great at the paperwork, and got warranty stuff paid real well. On the other hand, he had been there 5 years, and would come out and ask how long it takes to put a thumb on an excavator even though we did one just the week before.

We were doing all the job quotes, it made a lot of extra work for us.
Do what you gotta do, just remember, it's easier to be a manager if you have done the workers jobs before.
