STEERING ISSUES!

Postby redwood logger » Fri Sep 11, 2009 4:29 pm

I can't get to the bottom of why my 93' turns sharper to the left then it does to the right! The frame is o.k., I just put anew box on so I know the pitman arm is clocked as good as possible. I checked the length of the tie rod going from the box to the top of the axle, its the right length. I just rebuilt the steering shaft coupler, so its good. I am out of ideas, any help would be great! Thanks

Im not sure what your problem is bc I havent got mine back together to diagnose and solve it but my truck with 35x12.5x16s did the same thing that you are saying and I have been told by a friend that a stock suspension truck has the same problem.

When I had my frame in the air with the forklift the other day I was turning the shaft going into the box by hand and it was binding up so bad on the drag link I think is what ya call it that when I was trying to turn right it wouldnt go past straight without pushing on the wheels and turning the shaft. And this was with a bare frame picked up off the ground so there wasn't any downward force on it to keep it from turning. My truck has approx a 4inch lift so if any one knows something good to do for a mod to help out the angle of the drag link let me know.

Sorry to steal the thunder of your post I just thought someone could help with my problem too.

My 89 is the same way. I think it is a common issue. I have not noticed it in my 93.

There is an adjuster bolt with a jambnut on the inside of the steering knuckle. Put your wheels straight ahead and see the the distance between the bolt heads and axle tube is equal on each side. If not, one side will turn sharper than the other. Mine goes better to the left, too.

I checked the turning stops on the knuckles already, I agree it might be geometry thing, but mine turns alot further to the left even when the tires are off the ground.

Does it have the stock pitman and draglink? You can't lift them at all and expect it to steer right without a drop pitman or crossover steering. Even an adjustable draglink is just a band-aid because it's still working at the wrong angle. You probably need one of these:

Where did you get that pitman arm? How much lift do you have? My truck has a two-three inch I believe and the only pitman arm I have came across was for a 6inch lift....

I believe he KTA is talking about on off of like a 87 v20 chevy 4x4. My brother has one he is putting together and I held his adjustable drag link up to mine and it looks like it would work great if you put the front end of the drag link up and the back end down IMO
