23 spline to 29 spline Adapter, Any Interest?

Postby rockjeep73 » Sun Jan 24, 2010 12:50 pm

Just curious if there is any interest out there for a 23 to 29 spline coupler for mating a 5 speed np205 with the big 29 spline input behind an auto with the smaller 23 spline output.

I am asking because after breaking a transfer case input shaft in my brothers truck he bought a 5 speed transfer case and we built a 23 to 29 spline coupler. We have had the coupler in the truck for about a year now and it it has held up to dozens of sled pulls and drag races at around 700hp.

Correct me if I am wrong but as far as I know there isn't anything like this available. I am looking for some feedback on this part and how much you would be willing to pay.

There would be some interest for sure. It would have to be strong. Sounds like your on that.

Trying to get a auto to manual conversion done in my truck, would it be more cost effective than swapping transfer cases?

Ya strength was my biggest concern and I was worried about how it would hold up, but like I said it has been abused and proven so far.

The truck that it's currently in is under going its next round of changes and will likely be closer to 800hp when finished so we will continue to punish the coupler, but at this point I doubt it will fail.

That depends on how much transfer cases are selling for. My intention with the coupler is to be able to run the stronger 5 speed t-case behind an auto, but it will also work for your application of an auto t-case behind a 5 speed trans.

Im not sure on pricing yet and I would like some input on what would be reasonable.

the 23 splines are easier to come by, and already available for many of us switching to a manual tranny. I have a divorced unit coming my way for my swap, but maybe I could keep my 23 spline with a coupler and sell the divorced NP205 again.

Price is the queston now. Depending on price, I would probably be a customer.

I have a 29/23 combo coupler here that a guy I know also used for sled pulling.
He broke a couple 23 spline cases and finally upgraded to a 29 spline.
The coupler held up quite well.

He's a certified welder and has a machine shop to use, and he does good work.

That's good new Mark. So the Transfercase will blow before the coupler... Probably good enough for most of us wanting a stick...

I can say that it won't be any cheaper than a new 29 or 23 spline coupler.
I could use a few of both to do this, though it's GFL finding somone who has 29 spline ones with no use for them.
Right now all I have is enough to do 1 combo.

Do those have the provision for the internal snap ring to keep it from walking fore and aft on the splines or a way that it always remains in the correct position?

No they do not as I didnt feel that it was necessary, but it is something that would be easy for me to add. When the coupler is slid onto the transmission output shaft there is no way for it to go too far on, due to the length and shape of the output shaft. As far as being turned around and used on a 23 spline transfer case that is something I will have to look into, if the shaft stops it from going to far in that direction then there really is no reason for the snap ring.
