Dana DRW 80 Swap, frustrated...

Postby RUQUIK » Tue Feb 14, 2012 11:55 am

I can't seem to find all the information in one place for this swap.

Thing I know Chassis cab 2nd gen 80 is 4" overall narrower then the 2nd gen dually pickup 80.

I don't want the wheels past the body much if any.

I can't seem to find the wheel mounting surface (wms) to wms of the 1st gen dually pickup, and my truck is 1300mi away.

I can get a pickup drw 80 for $500, but again to not want the "poke"

Also, I know on another forum, someone found the correct front wheels studs for the d60 for run rims with the 9/16 (common) stud hole.

New job at Suncoast has me really wanting to get this thing fixed and brought down to florida.

-Brad

If you want to text me the info that work too 302-258-5271

Frustrating that you didn't really ask any questions there....

what do you want to know? WMS to WMS of a 1stgen dually? or if the 80 will fit?

I have a cab and chassis 80 under my truck, spring perches are the same width, driveshaft needs to be shortened if it inst lifted. and wheels fit great under a SRW bed, even have offset rims and they dont stick pout past the body with 37x12.5's

"I can't seem to find the wheel mounting surface (wms) to wms of the 1st gen dually pickup"

Kinda asked

I'd like to keep the track width of the original craptastic Dana 70U on my dually as close as possible to the Dana 80 i plan to swap in.

" I know on another forum, someone found the correct front wheels studs for the d60 for run rims with the 9/16 (common) stud hole."

Need the part number for the studs to convert from 5/8 factory studs to 9/16

Both answers are scattered on the site, use the search feature, I know they are there.

d80 swaps arnt an everyday thing, so the answer is not just siting on a silver platter.

Have you looked at 77-87 Chevy 1-ton DRW 4x4 studs? I used the SRW version to upgrade my W250 from 1/2" studs to 9/16".

Welcome to 1stgen.org!

I used the studs from a 87 Chev K30. Works well ;)

Dorman Part Number, 610-282, These work well with steel wheels, hindsight, I should have used 610-283. They are a little longer. I don't know if they work or not but the specs are really close, besides being longer. Use whichever 9/16"x18 nuts of your choice, I used 2nd gen nuts.

FWIW, I just spend 10 minutes searching and didn't find crap on the D70 WMS. I have a feeling that may have been discussed in a for sale thread about one back in the day. We have a bad habit of getting technical in F/S threads sometimes.

From thread "project crew cab dually has begun"

Small update. I pulled the wheels off my truck and got the mounting flange measurement from the Dana 70.
Dana 70 Dually axle measurements:
Leaf spring centerline measurement is 43 3/16”
Wheel mounting flange is 72 ½”
Wheel offset is 7 7/8”

2003 (Drum brake) Dana 80 Dually measurements:
Leaf spring centerline measurement is 43 3/16”
Wheel mounting flange is 72 5/16”
Wheel offset 7 7/8”

Which means, the wheel mounting distance on the Dana 80 is 1/8” narrower than the 1st Gen Dana 70 and not enough to make any difference.
And since the wheel offset measurements are the same, the tire foot print will be in the same place they are now and the tires will not rub the inner fenders or stick out any further than they already do now using the stock truck bed.

So, what'd you type in to find that?

I searched mainly in the chassis section unfortunately. Though in the Google search "Dana 70 WMS" turned up the thread "best D80 Dually Axle", and "Dana 80 WMS" turned up "Raymo's 93 Chevy" and "Best D80 Dually Axle".

its a PITA, the search system is F###ed

I knew for a fact that KTA was in the discussion where there was talk about it, and I searched "axle width" with KTA as the author...and it didnt give me anything :x

so then I just searched axle and eventually found it.

Imagine the rest of the good info that is buried deep under our impotent search system :x

Worst case scenario, as me to measure it up.
I have plenty of stuff around here to go off of, with access to more.

Conversion studs?
To go from 5/8" down to 9/16" on a 4x4?

I know with a Dodge dually 1 ton 4x4 you can just use them from a 1986 CHEVY 1 ton dually 4x4 application.

Not sure if the 3/4 tons are the same Chevy to Dodge or not, never checked.

Yeah, Factory came with Rockwell manufactured 5/8 fine thread studs (310 ft/lbs recommended torque spec) front and back. Would need to find a 9/16 stud with a 5/8" press fit shank.
