Performance Shifters for my Tranny

Postby Begle1 » Sat Nov 24, 2007 4:55 pm

Could anybody make any suggestions or recommendations for a performance shifter with reverse lock out? Seems to me like I want a ratchet shifter for the most consistent shifts?

I don't have any experience at all with these things and would sure like to have something that'd help prevent grenading something with a missed shift. And something more consistent than the column shifter would not be a bad idea.

I think that I'm after something like this, but with a provision to mount an 18 inch shifter lever instead of the 4 inch shifter lever.

Here's a Hurst designed for "truck" applications.

That 383-8510 at 15.5" looks like just the ticket and yeah it would be WAY better than the column shifter!

The smoothest one that I've used is the Cheetah from Turbo Action. I've got a cheap B&M Megashifter in my big block truck, and it is fine upshifting, but jams in park and going to neutral from 3 a lot. I also have a Z-gate and won't put it back in anything. The link didn't work for me, but I think that Pro-matic is setup similar to the mega. The main thing is to keep them clean and lubed.

Thanks.

Does Cheetah make a ratchet? The only units I see on their websites are gates, and they're $300 instead of the $200 for everybody else. Kind of looks like a funny mount too.

Was the jam a bad jam or just something that took a second or two of jiggling to clear?

There's one on Craigslist for a hundred dollars that might just be too good to pass up...

I've never had on jam to the point I had to get the tools out, but when I'm hunting or pulling up to the line at the sand drags, its agrivating when it takes a couple extra seconds.

of all of the various racing shifters I have used over the last thirty years my current Hurst quarter stick is the best.

So I got a B&M Megashifter. By virtue that Checkers had one on the shelf and anything else was a week away. I'll have to watch out for that binding issue you're talking about.

Hopefully I can get it in with my new Suncoast tomorrow.
