KDP?

Postby TWorline » Sat Nov 29, 2008 9:27 pm

We have all read the post: I have a 1st. Gen truck should I be concerned about the KDP since it is primarily a 2nd. Gen problem? The answers vary between no, maybe, and yes. IF YOU HAVE NOT CHECKED YOUR KDP DO IT AS SOON AS FEASIBLY POSSIBLE, YOU MUST KNOW THAT EVERYTHING IS OKAY INSIDE YOUR TIMING GEAR CASE BEFORE YOU FILL YOUR TRUCK AGAIN. :shaking2: Okay, now I feel better. In reading these post it always seemed like there was a big deal being made over a little "pin". Well that little "pin" is 3/8" in diameter and 5/8" long and sits right above the cam gear. Even if it somehow does not break your cam in two, go out through the case, take out your oil pump and falls down in your oil pan one of his buddies the KCBs'(Killer Case Bolts) will probably finish the job. I took all of them out with my fingers when I changed my gear case. On a positive note my cam retainer bolts were tight. Here are a couple of pictures and there are more here: http://s116.photobucket.com/albums/o28/DieselRam250/KDP%20Pictures/

Here you can see one of the KCBs' peeking out from behind the cam gear where it wore the head and shoulder to the point it looked like an acorn bolt.[img][/img]

Right around 186,000 was all. I was very fortunate the case was all it took out. I had just got done putting my S300 turbo on was breaking it in ;) , when I heard a clunk like a tool falling off of the core support. When I pulled it back in to the house it was leaking oil out the front.

Mine's got 86k on it now and I feel like I'm running on borrowed time!

Do you need to pull the cam to get at those case bolts?

No, it has been said you can get the one in behind with a special bent wrench and then use the "weeping locktite" to keep it there.

Mine had 220k miles when I did My kdp, which was way IN so I just put a bolt in front (drilled the case) and then punched a bit of the aluminum around it to block it if it ever moves. I read a lot about the kdp but never heard about the bolts being as much of a problem as the kdp itself. I tightened the bolts just bc but as stated some of them are hard to get to and since I didn't know better I didn't worry about it. :?

I had been wondering what type of mischief you had been getting into. Now I know it was the type you didn't want to do. Sorry to hear about the damage.

I did mine about 75K ago.

Now for the big question. Are you leaving the stock cam in it??

Dude, sorry to hear you got bit. Lucky it wasn't worse! ;)
Now I'll make you feel really bad. :D

When I did mine at 209k, the pin was in and all the bolts were tight. ;)

Actually I am just getting around to posting the pictures that I had promised to post. I did this the past summer right after IRP. Yeah the stock cam went back in.

My KDP was long gone when I got the truck. based on evidence at the scene, I deduced that the pin came out, got flung between the case adn gear cover, and went either into the oil pan or out. I somehow had an old seal lying around, and put it back in. Now the old seal is leaking (not surprised), but I wont have ANY rust on the front half of the truck for the next 150K.

288K on the truck now. Bought it with 282K, and I think the KDp had done its thing just before that. If I ever sell some parts or a 1/2ton truck (or God forbid, shoe some horses), I'm going to buy a new seal kit. probably install it at SOP6.

My work in "slow" progress ( the 93 ) was ok when I checked it. I had the truck torn down and the engine out so I thought I would do it then. All the bolts were in and the pin was still resessed in the case. I took a punch to it so it could no longer slide out of the hole. I also took out the case bolts and loctited them for giggles.

I just took the center punch ( very sharp point ) and whacked the end if the pin. It swells the end of the pin and wedges it in there. I also ( for more security ) took the punch and made several small " dents " in the case hole. That also makes the hole smaller. There is no way its coming out. ( KNOCK ON WOOD ). It cost me a tube of silicone and some time. My crank seal was not leaking so I reused it and still no leaks. I did not have the bucks for a gasket kit. No you can't weld it.
