Question about pricing??

Postby slow_90firebird » Fri Sep 21, 2012 7:55 pm

Hey guys not sure if this is the right forum...

Had a noise start up 2 days ago... Got a little worse... Took Stethecope and noise was loudest near bell housing.

Took inspection cover off to check tc bolts, found 2 cracks in flex plate.

Truck has 270k orig motor and orig a518. Still runs great shifts good.

What would be a fair price to ask for a truck with a bad flex plate?

Ya maybe for people that take trannys out every day... not for me. I gotta call the transmission shops tomorrow but I dont think it will be cheap enough to make it worth fixing... There is so much stuff that looks like it would break like rusty cooler lines, linkage, etc. I wouldnt even know where to begin sourcing parts. Plus I have no idea how to disconnect the linkage from the transfer case shifter, or the automatic gear shifter.

Heres most recent pic, dent in fender and bumper pounded out with hammer, looks alot better but not perfect.

Well there is some rot underneath, it looks alot better than it really is... the floors and cab monts need some love along with the frame in a few spots.

I called the transmission shop today and they said it would be $1100 just for the labor :|

I could get more pics, but I am reconsidering fixing it also. I need something other than the pontiac to get thru winter. I have been looking online for trucks for sale, specifically older chevys like k10 or k20, or a k5 blazer. Not finding a whole lot, and the ones I do find are real steep in price. I had a 78 K20 and loved that truck so simple to fix. Just a gas hog with the steep gears and the 35" TSLs.

Im gonna make a new thread in Transmissions with a few questions on how to disassemble some parts...

7.4 that makes the labor rate like 148/hr maybe just didn't wanna tackle the project...

But if you do it for 400 that means your working for pennys. The average labor rate around here is about 100 for regular automotive shops (Firestone Monroe etc) cummins was either 125 or 150 last time I was there. Not sure about tranny shops.
