I must have done a good deed as God saw fit to not have the thing come apart while the engine was running.


Ya reckon a stock injector next to five 6x0.016" injectors would cause a problem with thoughtful running till I can get a replacement?

I don't think it would hurt any thing, ih told one of our drivers to run a truck with a bad injector for 5 days until they could get to it...and it was missing when it ran.....

Weird. That's the second Scheid 6x16 I've seen split exactly like that.

Wow! Good thing you caught that! I would at least send a boroscope (sp?) In to see what damage might have been done to the piston.

No apparent damage to the engine. It just went down on power and started killin skeeters. In tracking down the issue, with the engine idling, I cracked each of the injectors noting if it made a difference . . . #5 made no difference. The exhaust was presenting heavily with a white fog. Pulling #5 out found it wet with raw fuel.

I've just now temporarily stuck a stock/OEM injector that I had in there and it runs just fine. There is an odd knock/tap that I suspect is due to the well advanced injection event timing I've been running with the 6x16s.

I'm gonna have to retard it some.

I wonder if this is a sign of potentially similar issues with the remaining injectors.

Curious why that would happen. Found this link to some materials research of injector nozzles. Didnt read it all yet, maybe be of some interest.
Something to do with the rough microstructure of edm leading to stress failures, it did split about center of orifice ?

Just get one new injector, then feed some sand down the intake while the engine is running. It'll radius the edges of any potential cracks that may be starting and keep them from getting worse. Hell, if what earthdad says is true, you may want to feed some sand through your injection system too, it'll help smooth out the roughness of the holes as it passes through them. I would put the sand in at the injection lines though, no use running it through your IP if it doesn't need it, it's already really smooth in there from the pics I've seen.

Hes got a good idea. Baking soda may be a better option as it is a little finer than sand. BTW, I didnt conjure any of this stuff up. If the source I referenced was'nt true, I guess shot peening would be foolishness???
I deffinitely have much to learn bout diesel tech, and I think you guys have loads of knowhow and skill and I would'nt be where I am with my truck had it not been for some great advice. But I dont think I'm all that off on this.
So, even with my lack of experience, I agree, they should all be taken out and examined for stress fractures.

You're correct, it is much finer, but I question if it's actually resilient enough to make an impact on the steel itself. I think BC would be better off getting some normal sand, making a little pile in his driveway, then hammering on it until he gets the size that he needs.

On top of the customization this allows him in it's size, it would also save him a trip to the store since he could just go out and get any sand/dirt out of his yard.

I gotcha It just takes some time to see member characters develop within the limitations of black and white text and a few assorted smileys. By all means "do what you do best".
