Did more tear down and inspecting on my 91, and I found this when I removed the cover off the rear diff...

Junk, baby, junk! Plan on installing an open diff or finding a replacement LSD. You could also go with a locker of some kind. I put the LSD in mine and it was time consuming to shim it correctly for backlash and clearance and all that crap. Looks like you'll be doing that anyways. Are the gears any good?

SH!T!!! The gears look great, even though it had only a pint or so of "chocolate milk" in the diff...

So if the gears are good, you may be able to find a carrier and just put your gear on it and reshim the carrier like I did. Since the oil was crappy, and it looks like the truck has been used hard, you might better replace the pinion bearings too. Or look around and try to find a complete rear may be the best bet. Call our buddy Mark. ;)

Yeah, the pinion has a bit of up/down and in/out slop in it when moving it at the yoke. I was kinda proud of this thing being a factory 3.07 LSD truck. What can I re-use in this thing? Can I put one of those lockers like Tacoclaw did in this carrier or do I got to get an open diff carrier? I really don't know jack about diffs...

Pinion bearingas are shot then. You can probably reuse the pinion and ring gear. If it's already a LSD, you can't put a LocRite in it. They are made for an open carrier. Is that spider pin loose too? I see the bad spot, but that may have been hitting the pinion. It's hard to tell. If the carrier is good, you may be able to rebuild it with new clutchs, bearings, etc. You need to tear it out and apart to get a better idea and see what's worn/ beat.

Ptoombs did you have the special bearings to set up the rearend or did you just press on and off the new\old bearings to get your backlash set??

Its easier to buy a extra set of bearings and use a die grinder to open up the inside so they slide off and on to set shims.

When you remove the pinion, check the condition of the pinion shims. If the shims are beat to hell, I would NOT reuse the gears... We had a dana 60 lose a shim on the pinion and it affected gear lash eventually destroying gears. You said the gears look good so I'm assuming the wear pattern is nice. Was the speedi sleeve for the yoke? I never had much luck with them. The sleeves aren't very cheap and new 1410 yoke isn't much on ebay etc.

My dad, when setting up the carriers, has a pair of carrier bearings he reamed out so they fit over the carrier without being pressed on. Makes setting up the carrier a dream. EDIT: Andy just said the same thing. There's plenty of write-ups on 4x4 sites dealing with proper carrier setup and a download of the dana service manual floating around. It will be a job and to be honest, setting up a carrier is MUCH easier out of the truck. The downfall is those leaf spring u bolts can be a royal pain in the A$$. Easier to just cut the bolts and get new ones from dorman at your local auto parts store or spring shop. Dorman has a list of U bolt dimensions so measure and find the right ones.

Hopefully, those 3:07s are in nice shape once you remove them and inspect further.

Warning for the above post, not all bearings are created equal.......it might be for the axle but might be thicker, ive found that out a few times screwing around with half ton rears. Some times the inner races are thiner or thicker there for ruining your shim placement. A micrometer is your best friend here ;)

Well, it doesn't look like much can be salvaged, the gears are shot too. The ring and pinion look pretty good, along with the case and spider gear pins.

My inner cheapness is saying, buy clutches and the bearings it HAS to have and run it.......my "don't wanna break down in the middle of BFE" side says buy all of it. The cheapness would win ;)

Honestly.....I'd run it with what would make it live till my wallet got thicker

I might just do that, besides maybe trying to tighten up the pinion a bit so that the seal would last more than a month... :?

The truck will sit most of the time anyways, just like my 92 did. The furthest trip it may take is to S.O.P. or to go fetch up a body donor or something...
