new to dodge 1st gen brakes

Postby jnielsen » Tue Dec 25, 2012 3:30 am

as it says im new to the 1st gen ctd and I have spent enough hours under this truck now to get frustrated with the truck not stopping good. I have a 1993 w250 12v intercooled, i'v put new pads and shoes all around, lines, removed the RWAL new brake booster , vacuum pump. and the truck stops alright at 50 when you put the brakes on, pulls to the right when braking, and I did put new cailpers on the front. still pulls. but the worst thing is i have to put all my weight into the pedal to get her slowed down at 25 mph or below to the point it's scary to drive in town. I have no idea why it's doing this and I can't keep throwing money at it. hopefully someone has had this problem. thanks

Did you replace the soft lines in front? And the stops great at 50 but not 25 sounds like low vacuum. Did you check the vacuum line from the pump to the booster?

Welcome!

Don't forget to adjust your rear shoes too.

yes I adjusted the rear shoes, brand new line from the pump to the booster, both soft lines front and back changed , the only thing i can see is the cruse control ball has been removed for the plow they put on before me but it's got a bolt in it i can't get out and it's got a tight clamp. see what i mean frustrating

Booster is probably shot, not unusual.

I would hydroboost before messing with larger brakes.

Especially since hydroboosting can make "little" brakes seem bigger, by eliminating the POS vacuum booster.

Is the pump pressure from our Cummins ok for say a mid 90s Chevy hydroboost? Just fab the booster setup and run your hydraulics?

You "should" use the '97-2002 Power Steering/Vacuum set up, which is from hydro-boosted truck.
It has both a return for the hydro boost and power steering AND it is a higher output pump to carry the load for both items.

Not to step on toes but.....they're the same pumps. The adjustment on the spool valve behind the high pressure fitting is screwed in alittle farther, really simple to get at and will save money. I've read where others have t'ed the return lines and it works ok. Only time they'd have flow at the same time is turning while applying brakes which would happen alot
