2 gen rear 3 1/2" brakes ?

Postby D-dog357 » Wed Jan 09, 2013 11:17 pm

Here's one for ya,
I was at a yard the other day looking at rear brakes. They had a 94 3500 Cummins that had 3 1/2" shoes. The bed was gone so I don't know if it was a dually or what. Also I think it was in '98 they switched to out-board drums.

That got me wonder'n about switching them out next time I need drums. O'Rileys says the price is only a couple of bucks more. I know the studs are different and the axles would need to be reamed.

I guess what I'm asking is - has anyone else done this or thought about it ?

I know - "have you tried the search engine ?" Ya it's worthless, can't find myself with that thing.

2nd gen brakes are 13", vs 12" on the 1st gens. All 2nd gens have outboard drums. You would have to swap over the backing plates as well, and probably weld new brackets on the axle to do so. I thought about this, and then found a dana 80 to swap in, complete with larger brakes & outboard drums.
