Brake issues

Postby dunes450r » Fri Feb 10, 2012 1:14 pm

a few weeks ago i parked my pickup (90 w250) at a friends house then left a couple hours later that night. my brakes were great when i got there, but when i got in to leave they then had a very spongy feel to them. i've tried bleeding them 3 times now with no luck. when i press the pedal it takes a few inches of travel to get it to firm up and actual begin braking, but when it start braking it pulls to the drive side (air in the passenger side line??). if i pump the brakes 2-3 times then they feel decent but still pull slightly right.
in bleeding them i noticed that with the master cylinder top off, when i press down on the pedal, brake fluid squirts out the reservoir portion of the master cylinder. and when i let off the pedal after depressing it fluid sprays out in the same way (air forcing fluid out of the lines?)

any insights or help? do i need to keep bleeding them, or replace the master cylinder? i'm not sure which direction to go.

thanks

Dunno how normal it is, but my truck sprays fluid everywhere when I hit the pedal with the top off too.

The master is suppose to do that. Every one I've looked at has.

Have you check to see if the brake booster vacuum line is intact from the pump.

How's the pressure of the brake fluid out of the bleeders?

If there's noticeable drop from one side or the other you may have a bad rubber line.

the vaccum line is intact. no noticeable drop in pressure from one side to the other, does your master cylinder squirt fluid back out when you let off the pedal?

The master that was on the truck when I bought it was leaking out the back onto the booster so I replaced it with a reman. The reman worked ok for about a month, albeit quirky. The pedal would sometimes be solid with good braking, sometimes sink and still have good braking. Other times it would be solid and feel like I'm trying to stop a bus with a Volkswagen, or sink and barely stop. Then occasionally it would pull to the left, definately from the rear. It felt like someone slammed their oar into the water in the back of my canoe. It eventually failed to the point of consistent sinking pedal.

I replaced it with a warranty reman. Good for a week or so but now the same shenanigans. Seems like the farther I drive the better it gets, or maybe I'm getting used to it. I did unplug the RWAL, but I haven't bypassed it or smashed the module, may be a necessary step.

My parts guy found me a good deal on a new, not a reman, that I'm going to try soon. Didn't know I was going to need to buy a gallon of DOT3.

Not that I've noticed.

I have the same problem with my brakes too. I just keep a bottle of brake fluid handy, until I have time to get underneath it and try to fix the problem. I think I may need to replace my brakelines though just because its an old truck with 260XXX miles on it. Anyone have any idea how much brake lines would run me on cost?

i completely redid them a few months ago. new wheel cylinders, wheel seals, shoes, e-brake cables and springs. now my e-brake works(never did before) and my brakes are solid

If it pulls right you LH brakes are not working properly. Lift the wheels off the ground have a helper press the brakes then release, then try to turn the wheel if it drags then crack the bleeder if it then turns easy replace the hose if it still turns hard replace the caliper......unless the pads came apart check those closely

Just a suggestion - the flexible hoses are old, softened and swelling when you press hard on the brakes ? A difficult issue to identify on your own.New flex hoses are inexpensive.
