Replaced Rotors and Pads. Now hanging up?

Postby 93DodgeCummins » Sun Jan 20, 2013 11:20 am

I just replaced my rotors and pads this weekend. I have driven it about 20 miles so far. When i had the new rotors and pads by calipers would not fit so i retracted them by using a large c-clamp. Then the went on just fine. I jacked it up to take the tire off to retorque my spacers and I noticed that both brakes were sticking some. It took a little effort to turn the hubs. What should i do?

Did you clean everything off well with a wire brush? Inspect the rubber hoses and Calibers, those 2 are most likely to cause your issues.

The hoses and everything looked good. It was pretty clean. I was thinking maybe to check the brake reservour to see if it was overfilled because I had to retract the calipers but I dunno

Usually the rubber lines go even if they look good.

I had the same problem and new rubber lines fixed it.

So bad rubber lines cause the calipers to stay slightly tight after breaking? My brake pedal feels good juust like it always has.

The rubber swells inside and the fluid can't return to the master when you let off. I've seen the brackets and crimps rust and squeeze the hose shut also.

Easy way to check, pump your brakes up then open the bleeder on the calipers,if fluid squirts, bad lines. If not then its the calipers. I've seen plenty old trucks have issues with their calipers. They set for long periods of time and rust builds around the piston in the groove for the square cut o-ring,this causes the pistons not to return, and burn the pads up.

Also seen were old dirty fluid eats away at the calipers bore making it rough and when the piston is pushed back over it, it makes it hang.

This maybe be a dumb question but how do you open the bleeders? Just loosen them like a bolt?

Yep,if they're full of dirt take them all the way out and clean them up. They're just a bolt with a tapered bottom and two holes drilled in it.

Just make sure you bleed the brakes back out after you have removed the bleeder to inspect it.

I pumped up the brakes and opened one the bleeders. Fluid just oozed out, but did not squirt so i dont think its my lines. Also the brakes did not fully disengage when i opened the bleeder either so im thinking it could be bad calipers.

I would replace both personally if your doing calipers. Lines are cheap and easy to do.
