 that sounds a little ambitious for me..... I am out staring at our afc and realized I can modify the housing and get upwards of 1/4" (not that much needed) of gain in the low end. Need to have a super long slide pin machined, and then I can hack away at the inside housing.... and then have a custom, modified fuel pin made and we're in business.

Now that just helps on the low end of things, which is majorly needed. But, I've still got to address the issue of having way too much fuel.

Is anyone on here a machinist? My normal guy is SLAMMED

Congratulations Grandpa Dar. I'm pushing 62 and my daughter is 7, so I get the grandpa routine on a regular basis. I just tell people that I wasn't sure I'd ever have a grandchild, so I made one myself.

Anyone have experience with a 2001 S10 with a 2.2L? My landlord has one that he thinks blew a head gasket (foamy oil), and he said if I fix it, I can have it. I think it'd be a great backup rig for when the first gen is on break. Only problem is I have no idea what a head gasket job is like on one of them. Any good forums or writeups on it?

Ellis would know more, but 4 or 5 years ago I did head gaskets in an older V6 S10. I had a Haynes manual for it and it was straight forward. I think I had less than $200 wrapped up in the gasket kit, manual, oil, and coolant.

Being a 1st gen CTD owner, you'll be cursing GM engineers at least a dozen times during the project.

Yeah you'll be in for a good time on that little truck

It's not really a horrible job. You will need a manual and a 1/4" drive 13mm swivel socket. That socket is a must have for the intake bolts. Two things that always happens to these heads are 1 they warp and will need surfacing or 2 they crack and warp and are trash.

When I quote a job out I price head, head set, bolts, and fluids. 7 out of 10 times they need the head.

Ellis, is it about like doing a HG on a 12 valve? Tear it all apart, get the head worked on, put it back together and set the valves then fire it up. What does your quote end up at for materials? With and without a new head?

Head usually cost around 300$ (if the original is busted, highly likely, make the machine guy look hard)
Gasket set around 80$ (buy felpro not the MLS crap everyone tries to push now days)
Bolt set 50$+
Labor 450$ (you'll find out why,not a hard job.....just takes too damn long)

There are now valves to set, their pedestal mount, just tighten down and let her roll. The absolute worst part of the job is removal and installation of the intake, that's where the swivel comes in very handy. The top row of bolts in the intake flange is the aggravating ones. The bottom you can get out easily with the alt and that big accessory bracket removed from the front of the motor.
The only specialty tool I know of one needing to do this is maybe the fuel line quick disconnect tools. They are inexpensive and available at any parts house for less than 20$.

Oh and the cracks are usually between the intake and exhaust seats, and run into the combustion chamber cooling jacket.

Don't they all?

I now know my truck loves me. 8) I moved it from in front of the garage over to the side in the driveway. A few minutes later I noticed a puddle under the front end. Looked around, and found the water pump was leaking. I know it loves me because it could have told me the pump was bad on the way to Iowa in a couple weeks.
