steel tank weight?

Postby IowaCummins » Tue Jun 23, 2009 6:54 pm

hey guys i have a question about a steel tank. ok i work at a golf course and we have this big irragation tank that is not in use any more and my boss said if i can get it out of there i can have it. so the challenge is on. this tank is 28' long about 10' diameter and its half inch thick steel. my question is how much you guys think this weighs? i was thinking of rolling it on to a gooseneck trailer. but i am kind of hesitant of rollignit on there and something bad happening. if some one knows how much a 1 foot square of 1/2" weighs i could find it out by measureing around and doing the math. any thoughts guys? i was going to use my plasma cutter but i would have to get atleast 125 foot of power cord or a good generator.

Looks like it's around 21 pounds per square foot.

My calculations say that the surface area of a 10' diameter, 28' long tube is around 1,040 square feet; that means that the tank should weigh at least 20,000 pounds.

Quite a load.

You sure it is 1/2" thick? That is incredibly thick for a water tank. 3/8 would seem like over kill.

Forget it Begle. It's too big to use on your W/M system.

well i dont really know. i will ask tomoro tho. all i know is its the old system where they didnt have the pumps that could keep up to the pressure drop from spraying. this tank was probably put in place it the 60s or maybe the 70s possibly older than that. some of the supply lines that i have to replace are up to 9' deep cause they didnt know at the time about the frost line adn stuff like that. so it really sucks when you see a buble in a fairway on the old side. it used to be a 9 hole course then was turned into a 18 hole. its always fun replacing that stuff.

Wouldn't FeO3 weigh a considerable amount more than regular old Fe? Since it has those three extra oxygen atoms and all?

begle i was thinking the same as you. plus with all the sedament in the bottom of the tank from years of use then all teh years of sitting. i forgot to ask but hopefully i will monday. so another question. do you guys think my truck can haul it? it only going to be a max of 10 miles and through the city. a buddy has a dual tandem axle goose neck 30 footer. i have to find out what the max weight of the trailer is but you think my truck can do it? good holding power tranny auto. then i just did the brakes all around with the 1 ton shoes and big wheel cylinders. im pretty sure the trailer has brakes on both axles but defffinately one. is this a good idea or should i cut her up onthe spot?

how are you getting it on the trailer? I think it would be pretty sketchy, hauling thru a city.

Naw. My old man just brought his boat down to get a new canvas top put on. When he got there he had everybodys phone and cable wires ripped off and wrapped around the radar. :D He was just a lil over height.
